Re: Flattened thumb patch
I use "alien tape".
By itself, or to attach something to serve as a "thumb rest" on Low-Ds.
No adhesive residue. Sticks really well.
Some sort of carbon-tube-nano-magic.
Also known as "gecko tape".

Re: Suggestions - Low D or Low G?
Low D. With just one cross-fingering, you can play most tunes in G. Most of the fiddle tunes I've learned are in D. D is common in "open music-jams". Favorite "starter Low-D": plastic Dixon. Inexpensive (low-cost way to try out the long finger stretch). Light (easy to play for lo...

. . . Now, using a pencil or something similar tap the middle of the longer bit or the open end of the short bit. . . Very nice test. Simple, direct, informative ! . . . ways we could call subtractive, rather than additive . . . rasied grain inside a wooden flute or whistle that needs its bore repo...

Re: Wood whistles
. . . How would thickness of the body affect the sound? Remember that 100% of the sound comes from a vibrating air column. So for wall thickness to make a difference, it would have to somehow change the shape of the air column . . . An alternate perspective: the tube is an elastic body with it's ow...

. . . this video by Phil Bleazey and thought it might be meaningful to readers of this thread. . . That video was a joy to watch. Such clear, simple descriptions. Really admire the craftsmanship. Wish I could afford one ! edited to add: hit 4 separate registers without breaking a sweat ! Magical kn...

Re: Blowing machine
This graph shows the impedance of an open-ended cylindrical tube, 266 mm long and 12 mm in diameter, relative to the characteristic impedance of the tube . . . A few questions: 1) what algorithm is used to calculate these ? 2) what is the name of the software used ? Also, could you post the data ? ...

. . . Ah, but where to find long cylindrical objects of varying diameters? How about little disks, in say, 1mm dia increments, attached to chopsticks. Anyone have a lathe ? (this approach may be difficult to use if there are are both convex+concave bore perturbations. Also, there's always this: htt...

Tapered window is 9.43 wide by 5.94 long. . . Nobody knows as much about loudness as broadcasters. . . Thank you for the whistle measures + explanation of "loudness". I asked for the measures because I was wondering about the "available area" for sound emission from the window +...

Very interesting.Terry McGee wrote: ↑Sun Apr 16, 2023 1:20 am And here's another thing to consider - the actual levels of the notes as played on the two whistles.
2 questions:
1. How do the 2 window areas compare ?
2. How do the 2 bottom diameters compare ?
Also, what is a "loudness" algorithm ?

Well, the sky doesn't seem to have fallen . . . Thank you for posting ! I've been digging through old notes+refs on amplitude, power, dB + such, all aimed at interpreting such outputs from Audacity. Many years ago, I wanted to try and understand why a particular whistle had such a unique voice. I w...

. . . recording and analysing on Audacity on the PC. Thank you for posting a "first look" at tapered v. cyl. I've used Audacity on+off for years. Tons of capability for free. Favor to ask: could you post the full spectrum for D6 ? Both tapered + cyl if not too much trouble ? The version o...
