Re: Anyone play Howard low C? (Or D)
Just played my Howard low D (the older version before they re-designed the mouthpiece) today because of your thread. Mine doesn't overblow easier than any other low D I compared it to -- I compared it to the Thunderbird and V4 from kerrywhistles. Need to find my MK "Kelpie" so I can compar...

Re: Alex DeWilde custom stainless steel high C
Stainless steel is great for whistles, just harder to drill but there is less filing to clean up the holes. I made a couple from construction steel (which rusts) and one from stainless -- it was just an experiment but it plays lovely. Mine ist not nearly as nicely finished however as the DeWilde. I ...

Re: MK Pro Finish? Vs Polished Vs Carbony
I think that a Carbony should be great for cold weather. Metal takes longer to warm up. And the problem is the metal cooling down the air column inside the tube. Can't comment on the low D though, I only have the high D "quiet" and leading tone "session" model. Both play perfectl...

Re: Mollenhauer single key flute?
I often thought about getting the Aulos too. Buying directly from Japan it's really cheap. In the end I built a flute myself that can be played chromatically without any keys simply by making one with a larger lowest hole so it can be half-holed even in the first octave. Something that might in fact...

Re: Want to Trade Dixon Alto A Traditional Brass Whistle for another alto A
You're right. Didn't see that one. The aluminium versions are IMO easier to play.
I think one reason they cut down the model range is that they can't get some of the tubing anymore.

Re: Want to Trade Dixon Alto A Traditional Brass Whistle for another alto A
lI wish Dixon would drop them They are no longer made for quite some time now. Dixon currently only sell D whistles and flutes (low and soprano) and one lonely C-model on their website. The aluminium models were a bit easier to play. I have the G in brass and aluminium and the A in aluminium. I thi...

Re: Want to Trade Dixon Alto A Traditional Brass Whistle for another alto A
The lower Dixon "trad" models can be a little tricky to play. I have the G and it needs very good breath control. But then it sounds rather lovely. I'd keep that one and lay it aside for some time, then return to it and see if it sounds better. Those are no longer made. I do have the Dixon...

Re: Who played it best: May morning Dew
You mean like this? https://youtu.be/XR4t_UYuZyA Or this? https://youtu.be/1ciXa7_d4Ys Which would you recommend -- I mean a good version of the song being sung? Considering the question who played it best -- my favourite version was one that has since been taken down from youtube unfortunately -- i...

Re: Tilbury Whistle Reviews?
Also to my knowledge his current model is the ones on the site. They have the old fat o ring tuning slide back (vs the thin no o-ring one you may have seen), but the mouthpiece has the delrin tip and inner now which is newer than the all metal. Interesting -- I didn't know, he returned to the older...

Re: Tilbury Whistle Reviews?
IMO they are very, very good. But more free-blowing than the Killarney, as the windway is much larger. That being said however -- Chuck Tilbury is constantly reworking the design and I am not even sure how the whistles, he makes at the moment, do play. My slightly older aluminium model is just lovel...

Just remembered -- I still have the low D brass model with plastic head. But I don't think anybody would want that one . It's very heavy.

Re: Best mellow, easily in-tune high D whistle?
Only the brass version was discontinued. https://www.tonydixonmusic.co.uk/product/soprano-whistle-the-trad-nickel-key-of-d/ I also suspect that the change in tone of the trad model has more to do with a change in the mouthpiece design and less with the material. The DX001 still has the older design ...

Re: Conical bore D, and a Low F?
A TWZ might be worth a look. The "pure brass model sounds a little like a Clarke but takes much less air and is rather well made. Tunable too. Not conical though. https://www.tinwhistle.de/tin-whistles/twz-tin-whistles-aus-eigener-fertigung/twz-pure-brass-whistle.php I made a video with it 3 ye...
