Re: Finger Exercises
That last bit about improved R3 mobility is good news and a good illustration of the point of not using R4 as primary pusher (or counter-lever in a thumb underneath support system) and keeping them both slightly arched, not locked out. I have rather a tendency myself to lock them out even though my ...

Re: Finger Exercises
Chet, no wrath, but the thumb doesn't need to reflex - fleshy tip of a straight thumb against the tube is perfectly functional for a Rockstro support.

Re: Some piccolo help please...
 Looks like I botched the SL originally. A recheck shows 238 mm. The center of the 6th hole/R3 to foot end is 44 mm. Best wishes. Steve OK, sorted. Eb picc it is, probably quite high pitched closed up - likely gonna need at least 10mm slide extension to play at A440. I bet the octaves will be ...

Re: Some piccolo help please...
The E hole is the R3 hole! As in, open it defines/gives E - just as the L1 hole gives C# open! Tone-holes are always (correctly) named for the tone they vent, not for the one given when they are closed and the next one open down-tube speaks! Ok, allowing that bore and hole sizes make huge difference...

Re: Some piccolo help please...
Hi Steve. Pillars are almost invariably screwed into a tapped hole in the body. Sight unseen, I think bent keys are more likely than knocked out of line pillars (unless there's obviously visible damage). Of course, they may have been put in badly aligned.... Generally I'd counsel against removing pi...

Re: Some piccolo help please...
Definitely a nach Meyer German-made instrument. That means there's a fair chance it's a diapason A435 instrument. I'd expect an Eb picc to have a slide closed SL c243-250mm, but SLs with piccs are extra-iffy, dependent on bore proportions. My Rudall Carte Eb picc has a closed SL of 243mm and plays a...

Re: Finger Exercises
Common enough, and logical if not achieving a properly secure support set-up.

THREAD REVIVAL FWIW, Pete Kosel's original Flutomat is still available :) via the Internet Archive/Wayback Machine, apparently in functioning form, though I have not tested it exhaustively for functionality. http://web.archive.org/web/20110611151055/http://www.cwo.com/~ph_kosel/flutomat....

Re: Guido Gonzato’s Low Tech Whistle - Low D - Review.
THREAD REVIVAL I just discovered (somewhat belatedly - forgive me if this has been noted elsewhere on C&F) that Guido closed down his old, long-running website in 2018 and migrated his whistle making page to his new personal website. Please also note that he is no longer making whistles to sell...

Re: Finger Exercises
Blueblade, I think both Steph Geremia and Kevin Crawford are superb players, far better than myself. I'm sure they do what works for them, as should we all. There are no absolute rules about this, though there are absolute rules of physics and anatomy with which we have to try to optimise our person...

Ryarbrough - did you follow the links on YT to the other two related videos? The dangling R thumb one deals with several different systems. I haven't made a specific equivalent to 1 & 2 on simple system, but it really is exactly the same except it's easier because you haven't got a rotationally ...

Re: Finger Exercises
I made the switch from holding the flute in the way it felt most naturally secure without any tuition to a rockstro hold a few months ago. This was in anticipation of getting a keyed flute in the near future. It feels awkward at first but with time it becomes more natural. One of the side effects o...

Re: Finger Exercises
I was wondering what I should do with my flute hold? I have short pinkies! This has made it difficult for me to support the flute with my Right pinky. Should I try using the piper approach with my right hand? When I use my right finger pads my pinky reaches the flute. I do find it more difficult to...
