Re: More "divided by a common language" stuff
Which gives French the lead I think No, I don't think that "gives the French the lead" - not in terms of where the word comes from in English. It comes, ultimately, from the Greek, via Latin, with, in a minority of opinions, as far as one can tell, a small amount of influence from the Fre...

Re: More "divided by a common language" stuff
She was saying the word with the stress on the second syllable and a long "ahh" sound - kind of like "mon-AHHk". Ugh! Horrible! It should be "MON-uk"; actually, very nearly "MON-'k". Here we pronounce it more like MON-ark. We're odd that way. True. It just oc...

Re: More "divided by a common language" stuff
I think monarch is a strange word, very french and technical so it doesn't surprise me that a US presenter leans in pronunciation, even if it comes across as a guillotine shaped bite. I suppose using the word King is just too close to "The Scottish Play" for modern sensibilities, would ca...

Re: The mind boggles..
It can be said that up to now this conversation has been about what happens in semi-automated systems, and that the details surrounding certain events are what got this conversation going. I don't think there's any question that contributors to this thread are of a like mind about those details, an...

Re: More "divided by a common language" stuff
The trouble is, it was an American reporter, and I just had to switch it off. I just couldn't stand one more time (there were plenty) of listening to her mispronounce the word "monarch". What's so difficult about that word? Ugh! How is it a mispronunciation? She was saying the word with t...

Re: More "divided by a common language" stuff
I was just drawn to a piece on msn about an incident with King Charles and a little blind kid at the memorial service yesterday. The trouble is, it was an American reporter, and I just had to switch it off. I just couldn't stand one more time (there were plenty) of listening to her mispronounce the...

Re: The mind boggles..
I'd imagine it's not actually hacking, just no one doing any kind of checks to make sure it doesn't happen. There are a lot of these automated email systems, most companies use them. I'm sure everyone here gets promotional emails from businesses constantly. They automate them so that rather than ha...

Re: The mind boggles..
I see that the company itself blames a "semi-automated marketing tool linked to calendar events".
Even so, words fail me.

Re: Can't read it wrong
Well, for me it's all come to hang on a missing hyphen. In describing Truss as among "the shortest serving heads of state", I see an argument made that her verticality is not actually all that abridged (which I have no knowledge of one way or the other). With "shortest-serving heads ...

Not quite on topic, but it's certainly wrong - infuriatingly wrong!

Re: email notifications of PMs
Notifications still work, although they are delayed (for me) about a half hour or longer. Email notifications stopped for me a good while ago (and yes, all the right boxes ticked). I have them sent to a gmail address. They don't appear in the spam box there. Not a big deal but it did have me wonder...
