If you have an antique whistle check it for lead solder. They have swab kits you can pick up at hardware stores that change color when the touch lead.

Re: Killarney VS Sindt...again

I'm a big Sindt cheerleader and have never really noticed the C natural issue. Maybe I and my other Sindt playiing friends just blow to compensate. I have a Copeland too which is always spot on.

Re: Looking for a keyed flute!

I've not heard many Hammy's in my part of the world. Chicago seems flooded with Olwells. But one UK flute maker I've heard stand up to them quite well is a Glenn Watson. I was seriously thinking of getting on his list a couple of years ago, but started counting flutes in my cupboard. I don't know if...

Re: New Here - Alto A Whistle Questions

I have a carbony F and G that I like very much. They also seem easy on the air. I have heard their low and high Ds and they are good. I would think their A would be nice. I have a Sindt A myself and love it. I've heard a lot of Burkes in lots of keys and they all sound good.

Re: Beginner: Legato or Staccato

I was told way back in the stone age when I was learning, just to skip tonguing for right then, The issue, she said, was tonguing everything develops a rigid pattern that you just need to break later. So she'd lean towards breathing breaks, glottal stops and taps and cuts then adding rolls and after...

Re: flute roll

I made something similar for a friend last year. But I'd hesitate to roll a keyed flute. They can be sensitive little buggers. Perhaps if a fleece lining were added it would be OK for keyed flutes. But it does look nice for keyless.

You will have a bit of an adventure adjusting to the keys your singer favors. Two of my favorite singers around these part seems to gravitate to Eb, F, and C. These can be a challenge on a flute with no keys.

Re: What are they and what to do with them

You could attempt to sell them here in the used instrument exchange or you could just ebay them. I would assume they are not in working condition. But maybe they are. Tiny and not so tiny cracks are common as well as keys that stick and no longer seal. These are things easily repaired most times. Bu...

Re: Chip and Fiffle

Okay, at the risk of being unmasked as a total idiot, wouldn't you just refer to the brass on that diagram as "the tube?" I do think of the bore as more of a flute, clarinet or oboe term which references the cut on the inside of the body, and, therefore, in the case of the flute, the corre...

Re: New Here With a Question

I am going to sound like a broken record to anyone who's been reading my posts for a year, but for slightly more than the price of the Killarey John Sindt was still making whistles as of last winter, with a very short wait time. I have no idea if the line has grown, but I'd drop him an email and see...

Re: cork condition + spots on head lining

I'm not familar with his flutes, but you definitely have a moldy cork there if I am interpreting that white stuff correctly. I don't know if the dark color is a problem. If it isn't misshapen on the face you should be able to put it in after you clean it gently. I'm not sure what I'd recommend. Othe...

Re: playing at speed tools

I'd say that 5bpm increments are actually pretty big, especially as you reach the limits of your comfort zone. So, while traditional swinging (pendulum) metronomes tend to go up in 4s (e.g. 92, 96, 100, 104, 108 etc.), I'd say use tighter spacings especially with electronic/digital equipment. A 1% ...

playing at speed tools

I've usually been one to learn a tune at a moderate pace, then rely on the adrenaline of a highly charged session to get me going at speed. It has worked for me for a few decades. With Covid cancelling in person playing I recently began to use a method taught to me by a gifted experienced profession...

HaHa. In the age of Covid this illustrates why we whistle players are more likely to shoot the virus out at our friends than our fiddle playing neighbors. Keep safe folks. :)

Re: A selfish beginner flute. F or G?

Yes, those fifes are quite piercing hence their popularity in marching bands and their role back in the marching infantry days. I think I remember your interest in keeping the budget down when you discussed this a bit ago. If that is true my next suggestion may be worthless. But if you want an nice ...
