as much as I want a Burke Session D, I know my own limitations as well as the limitations of my relatively cheap whistles and know that mine are MUCH bigger than my whistles'

most expensive in my quiver is a dixon trad. love my feadog pro as well.

Stopped in yesterday afternoon to St. James Gate for lunch with some friends who just moved to Maplewood. Nice pub, good food and great tunes. When we stop by again on our next visit, I'll have to pack my whistles. Who was playing? Was it Tony on the fiddle and Tom Dunne on the box? Arbo I'm afraid...

i'm so happy this thread came up. i'm having this exact problem with "The First House in Connaught" which is basically DGGGAGGG..... kinda driving me crazy.

i saw a few youtube clips of he tune, but i can't get a really good look at the exact fingerings plus it was played kind if fast

since you like the Clarkes, what about a Shaw Low D? They sell for about $120 and seem to have that breathiness you enjoy (at least from the reviews I've read)

bugles are pretty cheap and all the kid would need to learn is basic embouchure to go between octaves. having played brass for years, playing taps and reveille on a bugle might end up being easier to learn on a bugle rather than on a whistle.
