Re: How many high whistles is too many?
Plenty of players play in tune just fine on a wide variety of whistles of different makes. As I mentioned before, there are compromises inherent in the instrument that are due to physics, so you're never going to get a "perfect" whistle intonation-wise. But again, plenty of people are abl...

Re: How many high whistles is too many?
Agreed. But part of the problem is also the instrument itself. Unfortunately, it's just very hard to get it in tune unless you have an extremely well-made whistle. The lack of embouchure control makes it harder to play in tune than many other instruments. Getting one octave in tune tends to make th...

How many high whistles is too many?
I have started playing in open sessions again, after a long hiatus due to pandemic and personal inertia. I bring a high D and a low D whistle. Most of the time there are two other whistle players there, often three. They're almost always playing high D whistles. Occasionally one of them will whip ou...

Coda extended range ocarina
After years of development, Karl Ahrens, of Mountain Ocarinas, has recently released the "Coda EDC Flute", which is an extended range, dual-chamber ocarina instrument. "EDC" means "every day carry," to convey the important point that Coda is designed to be a durable and...

Re: High whistles: tapered vs. cylindrical bores
I test-played a Carbony high D once. It was very sweet sounding, with excellent intonation, but overall soft volume, not unlike a Sweetone. Nice whistle but I couldn't bring myself to spend roughly 10 times the cost of a Sweetone for it. I have the slightly conical Dixon polymer low D. It's easily t...

Re: David O'Brien Low D whistle
That review is around five years old. The design hasn't changed too much. I have narrowed the airway and increased its height a little, which has improved the volume and focus of the whistle. Is this you? https://youtu.be/V3We1kvAE3U I'm guessing it is, and the whistle sounds very nice. It's a good...

I don't think I've seen any other recorder player puff into the mouthpiece in quite the way she does.
Here's another performance of the same piece (a favorite of mine) just a few weeks ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOyw6c9D4EM. The tempo isn't quite as brisk, but I like it.

Re: Recorder Jazz
For some nice easy listening jazz recorder, I recommend http://www.amazon.com/Jazzrecorder-Tom- ... B001HN8N5I. I personally think the recorder works best for this kind of jazz, which I realize may be too tame for many.

Re: WTB: Chieftain High D
Actually, I do have one of the old Chieftain high D whistles, like the one here:
But I'm not interested in selling it now. Also, this particular whistle is actually rather soft-spoken, which is why I like to keep it around for playing in the house.

Re: The Perfect Whistle
I'm waiting for the perfect whistle in the form of the forthcoming Mountain Extended Range Ocarina. This instrument has been in development for a long time, but it's expected soon. I hope. It will have a two-octave range, and it will be durable, like all Mountain Ocarinas. Since ocarinas do not &quo...

My own thought exactly. I'd love to be able to be excused for such playing.whistle1000 wrote:Why would you ask to excuse your playing? Nothing wrong with that at all. Lots of players here would like to play like that I'd imagine. Nice stuff...good luck with the sale.

Re: Chieftain Thunderbird
Yep, he knows his way around a whistle, doesn't he?! Phil's playing is a big part of what got me interested in the whistle. In fact, I'm one of these people who has "backed into" an interest in trad, from first listening to neo-Celtic, or whatever it's called. Phil's "Revisited"...

Re: Chieftain Thunderbird
On the topic of the whistle- So did he just change the outward appearance of the chieftain NR and start selling it again, basically? He says redesigned, but I'm curious what exactly was redesigned, and if there were any changes to actual sound and playability, or just appearance and comfort sort of...

Re: Chieftain Thunderbird
Yeah, that looks pretty interesting. I don't see it listed on the site yet, so we're still waiting on the price. The sound in the video isn't hugely louder but there's definitely a difference. The sound in the second octave has a bit of edge to it, which isn't bad. In fact, I think the second octave...

Re: Stirring the pot on the Unspoken "Forum Rules"
I still consider myself a beginner to the Irish trad music, since I've only been playing it and intently listening to it for under two years. It can be discouraging anyway, apart from what anyone says on this forum. There's so much to learn. Even so, I regard the opinions expressed here, whether gen...
