Re: Whistle to flute advise

I can vouch for the VDM Delrin. Mine is very easy to play and has great tone and volume.

I don't know how the hole spacing compares, so it would be best if you could try one out...

Re: 1907 Flute Stylings...

Lovely stuff! I believe the "untitled jig" that Feagh Hugh O'Byrne is playing is Donnybrook fair. Does anybody recognize the march?

Re: Scalloped cuts on leeward side of embouchures

I play a Skip Healy and it has a small slice on the leeward side of the emboucher (one divot....not scalloped). My flute is loud and has a good buzz on the lower end. But I couldn't tell you if that is a result of the emboucher cut-out or other design features.

Dulce gets around the fact that Dolce has been used. And there are forms like Dulcet or Dulcetta.

Re: How many flutes have cracked on you?

I'm the eejit that didn't check the humidifier often enough when the humidity dropped REAL low (7%) for a couple of weeks this summer. Antique flute, lined head, cracked through the emboucher. If it was my primary playing flute I would have been tending it every day. Sometimes I think it's better to...

Re: Sean O Riada Gold Medal Competition

So it looks like the winner is Tim McHugh!

Markus, I very much enjoyed hearing you play today. Great musicality and wonderful tone!

And I thought the whole competition was just amazing. Lots of different styles but all of it was the pure drop as far as I can tell.

Re: Internet Learning Options

I take lessons using Skype and, as said before, there is a minor problem with not being able to physically interact. However, my playing has improved a lot from these lessons. And in some ways they are handier because my teacher will often record a tune, or piece of tune that illustrates the point h...

Oh, since Sean is my flute teacher I'll be crossing fingers for him too.

And seriously, that list of competitors (not to mention judges), could make a great flute compilation album!

Re: Sean O Riada Gold Medal Competition

Thanks for that link. What a great opportunity to hear some wonderful playing. I may be able to catch some of that, although I will be at work for a lot of it.

Best of luck to you Markus, and congratulations for being chosen to participate!

Re: No Transposing - Music Written in the Key of C

There are some handy online programs to help with transposing, if you have the music in ABC format to begin with. If you copy the ABC text and use this: http://www.8ung.at/abctransposer/index.html , you can tweak it up or down whatever interval you like. Then copy that and paste it here: http://www....
