Glenn Schultz D flute
I have D flute that Glenn made for me years ago. It's a wonderful flute but sadly I simply don't play it as much as it deserves. I'd like to find a new home for it. The flute is in Cocobolo, with stainless steel fittings, and comes in its original routed wood case. Note that the Cocobolo has, over t...

A little favor, for those so inclined...
My great nephew (and great kid!) Ben is starting second grade in the fall and has a summer assignment of collecting as many postcards as possible for some kind of project in the fall. Mainly US, but he'd love seeing postcards from other countries too.If you'd like to help him, please send a postcard ...

Re: 3d Printed whistle.
Greg stopped by yesterday and showed me his 3D printed whistles. I'm lucky to have him living fairly close and we've become face to face friends and session mates. That first black whistle he made isn't a bad whistle at all, apart from an unstable low D note. It's fairly quiet which could be a plus o...

Re: Looking for Tony Higgins
More time to work on the slow airs and thinking of getting out the banjo and relearning claw hammer style. Getting psyched. Tony If you're playing trad, you might consider a tenor banjo. They're great fun and you don't spend all your time messing with different tunings. I love having both a...

Re: The History of Alba Whistles? (and other makers)
Would you be interested in my story? It's kind of long, with a lot of serendipity and incredible coincidences. Sure! Well, I wrote something up, but it turned out to be pretty long, maybe too long to post here. Maybe too long for most people to be interested. It's nearly 2 pages single spaced. :boggl...

You can also use Dupenol (sp)...it's for recorders. Piper Joe Dupenol is basically a very dilute soap. One advantage is that it comes in a handy dropper bottle. You can make pretty much the same thing with a drop or two of Dawn dishwashing soap in a cup of water. Just drizzle a bit of that through t...

Re: Making wooden whistles - need some help
No matter what you do, I don't think you can make a usable whistle with a 3/4" bore and short tube. You can't change physics. Keep at it though and let us know how you do.

Re: First Hornpipe
The Boys of Bluehill was the first hornpipe that I learned. In fact, it was the first Irish tune of any kind that I learned. It's not too hard and is pretty popular at sessions. I often follow it with the Belfast Hornpipe. That one sounds tough, especially the third section , but it's not as hard as...

Re: Tin whistle ornamentation!
If you're really a newbie, I'd say don't even bother with ornaments at this point. An unornamented tune played well is far better than an ornamented tune played badly. Some of the old timers didn't use ornaments a lot. As a newbie you have more basic things to get solid at first- breathing,rhythm,et...

Re: Top 5 trad tunes to learn on whistle?
\ I feel like what I've learned about ITM from going to sessions or reading about sessions hasn't made me like it very much. I like hearing the music, but as far as I can tell the culture of sessions is cliquish and unwelcoming. People typically have sort of grimly serious expressions on their face...

Re: Top 5 trad tunes to learn on whistle?
Hi all! I just started down my whistle journey, inspired by a recent trip to Ireland. I have found a group to play with here in West Virginia, but I need to learn some tunes. I have sat in with them on guitar before, and it's the old go round the circle with requests. There are just so many tunes t...

Re: What playability factors can I expect with a better whis
Are there any sessions where you live? There are likely to be several different whistles at a session, so you can hear some differences, maybe even try the whistles. As a real newbie, it's hard to really know what you want in a whistle. If you're happy with the Clarke for now, stick with it.You may ...

Re: Burke Whistle Patina
To polish or not to polish that patina is purely a cosmetic choice. For me, life is too short to waste time polishing whistles or whistle parts. It's futile, as the patina will inevitably return, and the time is better spent playing the whistle or other instruments. It's up to you.
