Re: Pipering today/tomorrow
The main trend as I see towards "contemporary piping", is the rhythmic even-ing of notes and changes in playing style to suit this rhythm. Its something that is not unique to piping and largely due to the proliferation of strummed guitar accompaniment in trad circles today, where melody ev...

Re: Irish music scene in Singapore?
The Irish music scene here is kinda small but there is one session that occurs bi-weekly or monthly (can't quite remember) at the Molly Malone's Irish pub at Boat Quay on Tuesdays. Usually starts at 9pm. Would be good to drop the pub a call to confirm when you're here.

Willie Clancy's pipes on Seoda Ceoil
Does anyone know who are the makers of the set Willie Clancy played on Seoda Ceoil? I noticed they're in C - whereas his recordings are more commonly on his D Taylor or B Coyne.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: Are the pipes a versatile instrument?
I think they sound too idiosyncratic to be anything than a novelty bit in other genres of music. I've heard the baroque and blues tracks in O'Sullivan's "The Gift" and while its a fair effort I think people who actually know those genres of music wouldn't exactly be impressed beyond the no...

Re: help identify this pop song
Try this, I've written it out in notation (there's a wav playback function too that sounds more normal)

The treble parts are sung, the bass parts are an instrumental filler.

Re: help identify this pop song
Its better if you can play the tune using the flash "play" sign on the website cos like you said the midi when downloaded sounds like random blips. This is an 80s easy listening pop ballad, with doubled male vocals on the first and last phrase, while the lower phrase in the middle is a dru...

help identify this pop song
I've been having this earworm for quite a while now and I just can't identify the song title, I've tried some online melody identifiers but nothing seems to come up. The refrain goes like this: http://www.kisstunes.com/m3/s.aspx?v=iZ39oD21290 It repeats itself several times before the end. Its an 80...

Hi Brad, that would be called a bawu (巴乌), its usually associated with the music of the indigenous minority peoples of China.
I think this vid is certainly one of the coolest trad music videos I've seen in a long while..

Re: Regional styles - interesting website
Thanks for that very comprehensive link Lesl, I got the one about the fiddle: http://www.irishfiddle.com/styles.html FWIW I don't feel its very conducive to have discussions on types of regional styles unless you've done a lot of listening because thats the only way you will actually learn - no amou...

Re: Which Key flat set
Bill, are there different characteristics that are often associated with different pitches of flat sets though (real flat sets not low pitch concert pipes)? I suspect this would depend very much on the maker but I'd like to hear from you all the same. I remember a while ago you mentioning to a buyer...

Re: Keeping Time When Playing
Why not just playing so slowly that you can focus on your rhythm and it won't trip up? Isn't that a more intrinsic way to develop your steadiness rather than relying on an external ticking device? I'm also of the opinion that when beginners to Irish music rely on metronomes, they would usually end u...
