Re: New versions of Tunepal now available

I figured out the problem: The Preferences has a list of tune books that the app checks against. After the update, for some reason all but one of those tune books were un-checked. I just needed to check them back on, and now Tunepal is working again.

Re: New versions of Tunepal now available

I just updated my tunepal (which I only bought recently, shortly before the pre-Christmas update; so I haven't used it much yet). Now that I've updated, I'm finding tunepal cannot recognize any of the tunes I play, not even the extremely common tunes. At this point, I can't say that I'd recommend th...

Re: Geantrai - 19.12.10

Just a guess: Perhaps it's a set that Blackie and Hugh included on their "We Were Drinking and Kissing the Ladies" cd -- track 9 is a set of 3 tunes ending with Humors of Drinagh.

Re: iOS Apps for Musicians

I just received an iPad ... Concertina XL app was one of the first apps I got. Kudos Michael, that app's a lot of fun. Since I mostly play stringed instruments, the concertina feels like a strange, alien beast that defies logic, but that doesn't stop the app from being fun. It appeal to me in the sa...

Re: Sessions and video cameras

As with so many things in life, context matters: If I botch a tune, then my position is, "Damned cameras... really, is all that filming necessary?" If I'm playing unusually well, my position is, "Where's a video camera when you need one?!" I seldom feel comfortable filming others...

Re: I'll be playing in the park (Schenectady)

I'll try to stop by, Paul! I'm embarrassed to admit I hadn't even heard of this event.

If I do make it there, it'll be toward the end... you know, I can bring my new Onyx whistle if you'd like to try it. Or would you need to leave right after your set?

Re: Question about thumb hole on Burke.

I have a Burke composite narrow-bore, with the thumb hole. If I had it all to do over again I would not have gotten the thumb hole. These days I never use it -- I just don't feel the need. I might as well cover the thumb hole with tape I guess. If my Burke were the only whistle I played, then I gues...

Re: What is the definition of a slide?

I've discovered that I already have in my possession a DVD that might help me immerse myself in slides and polkas: Years ago, I purchased a DVD, "Irish Set Dancing Made Easy (vol 1)" -- I'm not a dancer, but I bought it on a whim, after my first (and only) ceilidh. The DVD has sat on my sh...

Re: What is the definition of a slide?

Chiming in late to say: this is a great topic, thanks all! I'm glad to read that there's a sorta-kind-almost commonality between slides and hornpipes. Years ago, as I was just starting to get into Irish trad, someone (not really a trad player) taught me Road to Lisdoonvarna by ear. It made me scratc...

Re: What's your favorite C whistle & why?

I have a Syn set (one head, several bodies) that I don't use often, but the C body seems particularly nice, in terms of tone. But I haven't played many C whistles so I can't exactly compare.

When I was at East Durham I ran into another whistler who also considered the Syn C to be his favorite C.

Re: Onyx WDSweet whistle review

Very interesting! I tried low whistle for a while before giving up on it. It seemed to be bothering my hands, even with the piper's grip. Then, this morning -- before looking at C&F-- I played low D for a while, for the first time in ages, and I thought, "maybe I should give low D another g...

Re: My new Tenor Guitar arrived yesterday!

I'm surprised at how deep the sound is.

Also surprising: a video of Angelina Carberry and Martin Quinn playing Fletcher tenors. Who knew Martin played strings?

Re: Favorite Reels

I'm very fond of the first tune in this video, which I believe is Dr. Gilbert's: (Video is a Comhaltas video featuring fiddler Dylan Foley and some other young players) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=603s59hcOkQ And also very fond of the first tune in this video, which apparently is the Palm Tree. Bennington Irish Music Fest, Sept. 4-5

Bennington (Vermont) Irish Music Festival, September 4-5: http://benningtonirishmusicfestival.com/ I believe this is a new event. I'm thinking of going, given that it's only an hour's drive for me, and it looks like it'll be a pretty drive at that. I'm wondering about the chances of sessions.... no ...

Re: Slower-Downers

I typically use either Windows Media Player or QuickTime player. WMP launches a lot more quickly so sometimes I just use that. But QT player is easier to control... I actually cannot remember how to make WMP show me the full set of speed controls. They've buried it under some context menu somewhere....
