Re: A Thanks to Jem and Terry
Good to hear, Adrian. Glad to have been of assistance. Have you come across my Flute Hold document ? There's at least one other YT video of mine which is relevant in that, whilst it doesn't discuss flute support in detail or directly, it does illustrate it - the one on C# rolls: https://youtu.be/tR...

A Thanks to Jem and Terry
Thanks to both of you, for some related bits of info you put up here. I've been paying flute for a while now, but struggling with left hand cramping (top hand), from the Grip of Death.... I knew what the problem was, but was not having any luck fixing it. So I was getting frustrated, and not playing...

Re: Tg4 Special flute night
it's not the usual Se Mo Laoch formula Yes, very much so, putting a bunch of famous people together does not necessarily mean you will get something rising above 'a few people playing tunes together'. Mind you, if you get people together whohave a rapport and know eachother's music, you may well ge...

Re: What is this low whistle please?
Here's my theory: the whistle was originally made with offset holes, but somebody wanted inline holes, so they put rings/collars on to seal the original holes, and new inline holes were drilled. It's those two holes which are offset sometimes, to customer's order. I've encountered a number of old O...

Re: Windward flute orders?
It's good to know they're still active. I play a keyless Windward D in blackwood, and it's a wonderful flute. The only drawback is that it's so loud and powerful that it really shows where I'm screwing up. But that's what I wanted, as a flute I could grow into. I keep thinking that I'd like to plac...

Re: What is the latest thinking of the best low d whistles
To clarify Colin's system of windway heights for those who have them etched inside the bottom of their Low Ds: 1.00mm very soft/easy blower 0.97 standard soft blower 0.87 medium blower 0.80mm hard blower, only made to order. He also makes windway heights between these number so a Low D with 0.93mm ...

Re: Brian Hughes
Funny you mention him, I had never heard of him until the end of last week, when I saw his CDs on a website. Some of hisstuff ison Spotify, so I've listened to one CD quickly. He can play certainly. Haven't heard enough to have a real opinion.

Re: Flute making Apprentices
On pipemaking... little tangent here: recently read an old interview with Alex Currie, one of the classic older Cape Breton pipers who kept the tradition alive here. One part of it had to do with making pipes, and he said basically if you were a piper, most of them made their own sets. Matter of fac...

Re: Customs Difficulties
I'm having trouble with the logic here. I can cross a border with a blackwood flute, say, and I'm okay because t's a personal possession? So I could, I suppose, travel to another country fluteless, buy my blackwood flute there, and bring it back to my country with no problem, because it's a personal...

Re: Thread or cork?
Thread! Unless the flute was designed for cork, the sockets will not support cork. Thread also helps support the tenon, by binding it. Flutes with lined sockets are fine for using cork tenons... Could you expand on that Jon? Not sure I understand what you mean. My flute is an older M&E rosewood...

Re: Any thoughts on the new Setanta low whistle?
I got a YouTube update email that contained a plug for the new Setanta low whistles released in September. It says they are tuned to equal temperament which sounds like a bonus. Also, McNeela is running a Black Friday special on them. I wondered if anyone had a chance to try these out? Von Out of c...

I don't suppose there is any chance you will video it, and make it available online in some form is there? Even a highlights reel or something like that? If I was there, I would be signed up in a heartbeat.

Re: Recommendations for a low D whistle around £100?
Yeah, everyone should have a Bb. In some ways my favourite whistle. I remember when I thought I would never be able to finger it, let alone a low D. But it happens.
