Re: What Tune Are You Learning?

Kate Martin's Waltz. I've just listened to it on You Tube. It's lovely isn't it. Yes, it's beautiful. I heard a snippet here, from Rodney MacDonald (original CD is out of print) http://celticmusiccentre.ca/store/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=540&search=failte I also found a pod...

Re: Do you miss the old days

It's not as busy, by a long shot. A while ago, I did an analysis of how many posts there were per day. Admittedly, it was a while ago - a year or so? - but at that time there was no indication that the overall number of posts was any less than it ever was. Some forums - especially, for some reason,...

Re: Do you miss the old days

I miss some things from the old days (profile says I joined 2008 but I think it was a bit earlier); miss Dale. I miss Denny, and was sad to see MT Guru not here when I came back after a hiatus. Those people were good to me. It's not as busy, by a long shot. Good people here though. It's still the be...

Re: Thumb position

Saw a guy playing in a session in Ennis last night with his left thumb completely free and was playing at quite a lick as well. Took a while but I'm comfortable now with my left thumb free.... I play for a teeny bit with my thumb on the flute till I'm sure I'm lined up, then it drops off, available...

Re: Thumb position
HBradley's rt hand position in this video, especially toward the beginning, when one can see it, is instructive, IMO. Right hand or left hand? To me it's the left/top thumb that's interesting.... instead of gripping the flute, it's resting on a shelf. When you try it, yo...

Re: Thumb position

That video of Jem's, and a thread from Terry, set me on the road to fixing a lot of issues with my hold. I put up a thread on that a while ago. Anyway, I had a bad case of the grip of death, but now I am pretty comfortable with the left thumb off the flute at all times, and my right hand I have all ...

Re: Wood

Unfettered as I am by any risk of ever becoming a whistler of international note.... I like everything about wooden whistles, but don't have any yet. I'm a wood guy; cabinetmaker. I have lots of respect for a number of people making wooden whistles, and I've always been drawn especially to David Boi...

Re: Holding flute comfortably

Left hand cramping (if right handed) is not uncommon when starting out; some people get past it quickly, harder for others, including me. Folks talk about the 'grip of death', where you clamp the flute too tightly with the left thumb. I've struggled with it to the point of almost giving up, but I'm ...

Re: Flute Materials

What about ebonite? I'm interested in that. Not that I travel with instruments much or at all, but if getting blackwood across borders is going to be impossible, and if mopane becomes a similar issue, there is a body of thought that ebonite is an excellent flute material.

I have that recording, but never heard the name John Carlos before today. Not that much online. Can anyone fill in the details?

Re: Second high-end whistle - Liam O'Flynn question

I'm not really sure it's in my price range. Used sounds like a good idea There's a problem there though, the used ones are fetching absolutely silly OTT prices. A C was on offer here a while ago for well over $200 I believe, silly stuff. I want a C Sindt, and have been looking for one after finding...

Re: A Thanks to Jem and Terry

[I used the mill's indexing head to measure the angles. But apparently not every home has a mill. No matter, I have an easy low-tech way to measure angles of rotation at: http://www.mcgee-flutes.com/Angle%20measurement.htm
Terry, I feel sure my home should have a mill, but I can't seem to fi...
