Re: CP: Goldfinch Whistle World Tour

Hi all, Just to let everyone know I received the European whistle yesterday and I started having a wee play today. My initial reactions are quite good. It appears well made, with a very pleasing and comfortable mouthpiece. I was a little disappointed by the rather tacky stick on Goldfinch label, as ...

Re: thesession abc??

Or, if you happen to be a member of thesession.org, just download and play the midi file. No, don't!!! Midis from TSO are the worst abc midis I've ever heard. Absolutely, I didn't know it was humanly possible to kill so many wonderful tunes. If you want to hear them properly, check the dicography a...

Re: CP: Goldfinch Whistle World Tour

Interesting about the mouthpiece being suited to musicians producing a lot of moisture - this has been a perennial problem of mine, so I'm really looking to testing this little baby!!

Oiling whistles and nut allergies

I need some advice. I intend to purchase a new high D whistle and would like to opt for wood. Lots of fine ones out there calling to me ... Busman, Bleazey etc. However, I have a problem - the Bleazey website talks about initially oiling the instrument and occasional oiling thereafter. He recommends...

Re: Beware of cheap ebay flutes!

If you want further evidence - learn from my experience. I didn't know the first thing about flutes (my background is more guitars and mandolins), so when I saw a cheap flute on eBay, I thought - great ... buy it! Bad move!!!! The seller disappeared (with my money) and now I am contesting it through...

Hi Michael and nice to see you on one of the threads. I would expect/ assume that most people on this forum would readily agree the standard of any Burke whistle makes it beyond reproach. Indeed there are some here who have yet to own one of your whistles, but it still won't stop us (myself included...

Thanks Mark, This is a fascinating tune, both in its history and melody. A super find - let's hope that others learn it as this is a fundamental part of the English folk tradition. Going around folk clubs I often come across "singer-songwriters" and occasionally a traditional singer, but m...

Personally I've always found my local pub to have superb acoustics - and you know the funny thing? The longer I stay and the more they insist on me whetting my own whistle, the better the acoustics sound. :-) Isn't the miracle of sound a wonderful thing? Oh .. another half? I shouldn't really - but ...

Interesting to see how the Welsh are sorting out the name of our fine instrument. Now, if my school-learned Welsh still serves me well "chwiban" literally translated as "whistle", whilst "chwibanogl" can mean either whistle or flute (although "ffliwt" would be...

I think that Peter and Mitch raise an interesting cultural issue, and one that clearly have managed to resolve. It seems to me that in some respects we are victims of our own success. The whistle can now be found in most music shops with an array of different products available. However (and noticea...
