Re: Wood vs metal rings at flute joints
The clarinet maker Backun went one step further and on some models they make rings out of carbon fiber. Here are the rings on mine: lower section of the body: https://flic.kr/p/2pCiGuB Bell: https://flic.kr/p/2pCpNb6 Personally I quite like it. I think it could be very pretty on a mopane flute. Is t...

Re: Price for new Olwell keyless flute?
They've been going for $2000-2300 lately on the Irish Flute Store, and Blayne usually aligns with the maker's price for a new instrument, so it must be somewhere around that.

Re: Does an easy-to-play flute lead to a lazy or poorly developed embouchure?
I totally agree with Eric, it's really important to play on an instrument that you find rewarding. (Your notion of "rewarding" might change over time.) Here's an additional element for your consideration: a poorly developed embouchure will make you run out of air much more quickly, no matt...

Re: Flattening the second octave
This is a problem I suffered from for a while. I suppose there can be several causes, but for me it was the fact that I was blowing too much across , as opposed to into , the embouchure hole in the second octave. This resulted in a sound that was both sharp and shrill, especially around high A and B...

Re: Current 8 key delrin/polymer flute makers
Tom Aebi has been experimenting with Juma lately (a "resin based material", per their website), and he made at least one keyed piccolo and one flute headjoint out of it. He's a very flexible person, so if it's technically possible (cf. Terry's comments about block mounts and delrin), I sup...

Re: Anyone like the big round embouchure?
Julien: Why did Chris Norman think your flute's embouchure was unusual? I'm starting to wonder too, seeing that yours is almost identical to mine, and bearing in mind that mine was revoiced and has a repaired crack, which might have extended the short axis ever so slightly. I'd be curious to know h...

Re: Anyone like the big round embouchure?
Hi paddler, My Rudall & Rose #3934 (Patent Head) has a fairly round embouchure. Chris Norman commented that it was unusual and that it might have been a special order. The embouchure hole was revoiced by Patrick Olwell, after repairing a crack that went through it, so I don't to what extent it s...

Re: Rudall Rose Carte #6264
Thanks paddler, your explanation about the shortened head on a lower scaled body makes sense to me and seems to match my experience with this flute. The headjoint Jay Ham made for this flute (and that I'm now using on my Rudall & Rose) is longer than the original. Congratulations on winning this...

Re: Rudall Rose Carte #6264
Interesting! That certainly does seem quite definitive, but I am surprised, and a bit confused, particularly about the idea that your flute would have a flat foot and a sounding length for high pitch tuning that is supposedly too short. If the scale length is shorter than it should be for A=440 hz,...

Re: Rudall Rose Carte #6264
So, it seems to be an open question about whether this one will be HP or good at modern pitch. I'd be interested to hear from owners of later model Rudall Rose Carte (or Rudall Carte) flutes, what the SL (with slide fully closed) is for flutes that play well at modern pitch. Just 2 data points, but...

Re: Rudall Rose Carte #6264
The embouchure hole seems to be chipped, one ring is missing and the SL suggests that it's high pitch. These could have been contributing factors. They certainly were for me...

Re: The long foot c and c# keys
I've owned a bunch of 8-keyed flutes, old and new, including 3 with a Boehm foot. The best in my opinion is Jay Ham's (ask for his latest design). He offers several flute models, but his standard "large hole" Rudall has the other characterics you're after (tone, easy on the lungs, good vol...
