Re: Tom Doorley then and now

Just to emphasize the point Gordon made about the perils of drawing conclusions when comparing 2 clips done with different equipment, at a different time and place, with who knows what changes done post recording etc. Here's some bits of the same 2 clips with the volume altered and a little EQ. Thes...

Re: wooden flute tuning

Does somebody knows a flute maker that is capable (or disposed ) to make e flute that is well in tune? They all do. But what you have to understand is that the tuning depends on how they are blown. Let's consider a couple of well known good flute makers both of whom frequent this board. When Hammy ...

Re: How many C&Fers on Patrick Olwell's list?

and it's a Nicholson, not Rudall, model, btw. :) Here's how Pat Olwell describes his "Nicholson" model "Nicholson (Medium) This model is my modification of the so-called “Nicholson” flute, developed around 1820, of which I find Rudall-Rose flutes to be the best examples." Cheers...

Re: Flat bottom D

It's probably worth mentioning that some people have more success with this than others. Stephen Doherty (2008 All-Ireland Senior flute) told me that he couldn't cope with the low D flatness on his Sam Murray flute and got Sam to alter it for him. YMMV

Re: Has anybody here ever played a conical Boehm?

I own one and have played a few notes on it but it's not in a state where it's able to be played properly.... A future project is to get it going.

Re: cran!!!

I've been playing Emily's for a number of years: it used to be my favourite Irish reel until I found out it was written by Cape Breton luthier Otis Tomas. So now it's just my favourite reel.... The way I play the crans changed when I changed flute. Previously I would vent L1 and use tongue, R1, L3 T...

Re: McCarty Unofficial Tour-Flute Review Thread

It would be very interesting to see RTTA analyses of the tune clips I did of each of the five flutes - but I have neither the time nor the software set up to do such myself. If anyone out there is willing to do so, they'd be doing this thread a great service! OK Since you asked I've done this. It's...

Re: Nice Tavistock Rudall Rose on ebay

David I think you are getting carried away with a conspiracy theory. The damage to the label looks like moth larvae or silverfish damage. Possibly they are more interested in eating the glue that the label is stuck on with rather than the label itself. see here: http://www.jfplus.com/clothes-moths.p...

Re: On eBay - Antique Silver Mounted Flute by Hill and Monzani

Jim - in my opinion my Hill/Monzani is very very like an early small holed Rudall Rose to play. Same tone, same tuning (complete with flat low C#, D, D#).

Re: Boxwood Rudall & Rose on auction June 17

That address on the foot looks more like 7 Tavistock not 1. Which would make this a very early Rudall Rose. And that would tend to fit more with the pewter plug keys, the early style C/C# touches (no claw as seen on the later silver keys). And then there's the length of the foot which scaling up the...

Re: End flare - D vs C foot

Because we don't play the 2nd C as a harmonic of the low C
C xxx xxx xx c oxo xxx or similar

But for D the 2nd D is the 2nd harmonic so the octaves need to be in tune +/-
D xxx xxx d oxx xxx or similar

Re: Tunes that use the footjoint keys

Here's a few I play and there's others that I can't currently think of.
Morgan Magan
Planxty Irwin (in D)
The Fairy Queen (in C)
The Road to Skye
Rachel Rae / Danny Meehan's
Angus Ronald's Big Tune

I also use the C# key sometimes in the 2nd octave for d-c#-d
