Re: Aw, Gee, What's the Point?

Ah, from the lips of Joanie herself (C&F interview): If you practice just 15 minutes a day, the improvement in a year will mystify you. Another thing that I've learned is that you're never too old to start! If you can only play 1 tune, you'll get tremendous satisfaction out of it and that's wha...

Re: Repetition of same note

If you're playing Irish music (which I assume you are if you're on this site), tonguing is actually somewhat "frowned upon" I was told that "tonguing" was the wrong way to play repeated notes on a whistle or on a flute. Just to chime-in on this. Unlike the "classical" ...

Re: Whistles You Like and Play

Many people here suffer from that, in fact sometimes I reckon this forum is just a support group for whistlaholics :D . It's not? :P In my case, I like to play my Susato in D because of the volume. I play with a youth choir. Even with a mic, I need to be heard :P I just bought a Chieftain in A (tun...

Re: I have succumbed to WHOAD

In my case, I "acquire" other whistles to, in a sense, fill the need of a certain key. I'm part of a youth choir and I've started bringing in a "Celtic" feel to the music-direction. With this, we're starting to touch more and more songs that are in the key of A. So recently I spl...

Re: Bodhrán Classes - Group or Private?

Thanks a lot everyone for your inputs. I did sign up (and got accepted) in the group classes. The teacher also recommended that I start with the group classes and then evaluate my needs and if needed switch to private classes.

You guys are awesome ;) !

Re: Bodhrán Classes - Group or Private?

I am aware of the stigma of bodhrán players who pick up the instrument for all the wrong reasons. ;) I have a goal and purpose for the bodhrán. I'm aware that it's not a simple percussive instrument and that a bodhrán solo is NOT a drum solo :P. I also know that the person who opened this school kno...

Re: Bodhrán Classes - Group or Private?

I play the flute and I've been learning the whistle for about a year and a half now (I even started playing the Whistle in church). Ever since I've gotten into Irish/Atlantic Canada Traditional, I've been curious (uhm, maybe "obsessed" is a bit more accurate :P) of the Bodhrán. I'm definit...

Bodhrán Classes - Group or Private?

There's a traditional music school opening in my region and I finally have the opportunity in learning the Bodhrán from very qualified teachers. But, there's one important choice I have to make: Private or Group classes. I'm asking for your recommendations, suggestions, opinions, experience on both ...

Re: Are recorders cool...you bet!

"Sauvé" is like a form of "saved".

« J'ai sauvé le document » = "I saved the document"
« Tu m'as sauvé la vie » = "You saved my life"

[Back on-topic]: That's some pretty cool recorder playing. The left-handed playing style really threw me off.

Re: A Nice Experience

That's why I like to invest in great quality headphones so I can hear everything that needs to be heard without resorting to raising the volume really high.

Re: How long to get any good

Hans, you're right there, and I overstated my case. What I was trying to say is that it's easy to fall into the trap of blissfully playing what you already know. In this way you make no real progress, and reinforce any bad habits you've developed. The real progress takes place when you engage the b...

Re: Have you ever been robbed electronically?

Not really robbed of money, but credit yes. Last month I discovered I was a victim of credit card fraud—the "no-card-fraud" since I still physically had my credit card. I've gone through all the hoops and so far all but one of the fraudulent transactions have been reimbursed (probably will...
