Re: Lets try another Carbony Flute Tour

Nice-looking flute! I have two questions: 1. Is it a two-piece take-apart? I was thinking it was because of the metal ring half-way down, but the length of the bag seems to imply otherwise. 2. How much does it weigh? (Nerdy question I know, but I'd be interested in it for backpacking, and I'm a gram...

Bamboo flutes and cold

Hello! I have a question regarding bamboo flutes and cold temperatures. I have a few bamboo flutes that I use, including a couple of Olwells which I LOVE. :) :) :) I have read ( here and here for example) that it is not a good idea to play a bamboo flute in low temperatures because the warm breath h...

Nah, looks like one of the smaller-holed models. You need the big tone holes for a really good blaze. You should see a Pratten go up - oh boy! :P :P

Re: Flute Photos!!! Come post your flute pictures :)

I really don´t think it´s an ugly design, as some people seems to think.
I think it's rather handsome. It certainly doesn't look like anything anyone else is making. That Cnat key is pretty darned funky too. What metal is that on the bands, copper?

Re: Makers of Keyed Flutes: Counter-Springs?

Great, thanks for the explanation. Live and learn. My 19thC french flute has little metal insets where the spring meets the wood, so there's none of that "hole digging" that Terry talks about. Is that not normal?

OK, I held out long enough. What are counter-springs? :-?

Re: ¿8 keyed Boosey... 300 GBP?

Everything about it says german to me - metal end caps, diagonal g#, smallish tone holes. Nothing wrong with any of that, but definitely not English.

OK, I know I probably shouldn't, but I couldn't resist one more. Here's the legendary Roy Smeck doin' it old school.

If you liked that guy, you'll probably like this guy too. Another tenor uke player - James Hill.

Re: Anyone have a spare tenor uke?

As a guitar player too, I orginally went for low-g on both my ukes (soprano & tenor). Thing about low-g is that I find it turns the uke into a small guitar - but with too few strings. Re-entrant tuning gives chords more punch because the voicings are so tight. Makes the sound sort of shimmer and...

Re: M and E Cronnolly Blackwood flute, first impressions.

Hmmm... the Eb key is further up the barrel than usual - is it comfortable to reach with the little finger? Looks to me like you'd end up having to get the little finger under the ring finger to use it.

Re: alternative technique masterclass

Just goes to show: it really is the player, and not the flute that determines the tone.

Re: Josie McDermott's Flute

There's a picture of Josie and his flute in Grey Larsen's book (p. 389). It's hard to make out the details, but it doesn't look like the typical German flute to me. Certainly it doesn't have the metal end-caps, but they don't all have that. Definitely a simple system 8-key flute though. On the back ...
