Re: The Road to Ballyalla

You are perfectly right Kenny - McKenna's no.2 - I got them mixed up. Thanks very much!

Re: Anyone know the maker of this chanter?

Sorry Rich, I have no idea - you might want to ask in the "Uilleann Pipemakers" group on facebook, also, Kenneth McNicholl might know better than me.

Re: Bagpipes bag sewing

Hand sewing is (of course) entirely possible, it is time-consuming, hard and boring work, nevertheless you need to pay full attention to every single stitch. If you follow instructions be sure you follow them exactly, any shortcuts might (and most probably will) lead to failure. For low to medium pr...

Re: The Road to Ballyalla

The first part of the first reel is a version of "The Connemara Stocking" or "Apples in Winter", the second part is from a different tune I can't think of at the moment.
The second reel is Hughie Travers' No. 2.

Re: Anyone know the maker of this chanter?

Many years ago I saw a chanter by Jim Daly of Glasgow, if my memory serves me right, it looked quite similar.

Re: MacLeod and Harris Chanter

I have never heard of MacLeod and Harris - is it possible you mean Hughes and McLeod of Downpatrick, later Strangford? If so, no, they are not in business anymore AFAIK, Ken McLeod passed away some five years ago, I'm not sure if Robbie Hughes is still around, but if so he must be well in his sevent...

Re: Louder whistle with tapered bore?

Isn't it all about perception, really?
Sheer physical parametres won't help you in a playing situation.
Perceivable tone is more than just a combination of frequencies and measurable volume.

Re: Louder whistle with tapered bore?

As you already mentioned, the second octave is naturally louder than the first, but on my cylindrical Overton low D and low G, as well as on my Goldie high D, I can play the first octave louder than the second (or the second quieter that the first - whichever way you want to put it) - it does take a...

Re: Rushing the Bore to Flatten Notes

A few things got mixed up there. First, the oboe player changing the internal volume of his oral cavity can not at all be compared to rushing the bore - the equivalent to the oral cavity would be the wind chamber (chanter cap), as m4malious has already pointed out. Changing the chanter cap can indee...

Re: A Mystery Whistle

It's not a duduk, is it? Moof is right, duduk is a Bulgarian whistle-type instrument. Although (like on most East European whistles) the fipple is usually on the underside of the instrument, every now and then you come across one that has it on the top side. The bore isn't really conical, it is cyl...

Re: Left handed UPs

I guess it is more about what feels right - the first time ever I got a tin whistle in my hand and having no clue about how to play it, I put my right hand on top because it just felt right to me - I tried the left hand as well and it felt awkward, so since then I play wind instruments left handed. ...

I've seen his bellows after it had been replaced - there were several holes in the gusset!

Re: Small leaks in bag

It seems to me that there's not a leak in the bag but the tie-in is leaking, which makes a big difference. If the tie-in is of the star shaped kind it is very well possible that it is leaking in one (or more) of the corners, if the tie-in had not been firm enough. The solution would be, untie the st...

WTB: Kelleher bellows connector

Does anyone by any chance have a defunct Kelleher bellows and would be willing to sell me the connector (both brass parts, the part that’s screwed onto the wooden clapper as well as the one that screws into that)?

Re: Smallest Playable Whistle

On his first solo record "Traditional Irish Pipe Music", Finbar Furey played O'Rourke's Reel on a high G whistle.
While you can hear that the whistle (most probably a Generation) is not of the best quality, his playing definitely is.
