Best mellow, easily in-tune high D whistle?
Hey Whistlers, Which whistle do you think is the most mellow, least piercing whistle that plays easily in tune? I'm a fluter primarily but am playing more whistle. I play a brass Burke session whistle which is pretty mellow but loud and a bit too piercing on the high A and B (normal for whistle I kn...

Re: Clifford Rae flutes
Looks like a Protestant No. Irish fife maker producing instruments for Drum & Fife bands. On his website, I didn't see anything that looked like an Irish concert flute like the ones we typically use for Irish music. Listened to the video--the tuning is wonky on the fifes, but it's consistent so ...

FS: Old Boehm Flute, and modern Alto Flute
2 excellent flutes at a great price. Both for sale at $995 each. Check out the Craigslist listings. PM me directly if interested. Do not go through Craigslist; you'll have to pay the commission and the higher price to the dealer who has my flutes listed. https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/msg/d/berkel...

Re: The Irish flute: An instrument or o style?
Since I'm now playing the modern silver flute, I definitely think "Irish flute" is a style and a technique more than a specific instrument. You can play the wooden simple system flute in a very non-"Irish" way, just as one can play the modern Boehm flute in an Irish style and wha...

Re: How does ITM sound on wooden Boehm flutes?
I would say that Paddy Carty's tone is not what we would consider today to be a "reedy Irish tone". His tone is the way flutes 100 years ago sounded: more mellow, designed for blending with other woodwinds and the orchestra, rather than cutting through the way modern Boehm flute do. My 193...

Re: How does ITM sound on wooden Boehm flutes?
My right hand, particularly my right index finger, would go numb when playing my Irish flute. I switched to keep playing 6 months ago. The flute I play is all Boehm; the headjoint is made of blackwood by Rodger Young. Will post details of why I like it later. You can hear me playing this flute on th...

Re: How does ITM sound on wooden Boehm flutes?
90% depends on the player; 9% on the type of flute and cut of the embouchure. I'd say about 1% on the material. I've played all wooden Irish flutes, as well as a modern all metal Boehm, an antique German Boehm circa 1930 with a metal headjoint with plastic lip plate and all wooden body. My main flut...

Re: Extending practice time
Is simply playing very quietly a good idea or is this likely to build in bad habits in regard to tone and embouchure? I think it depends on what tone you're going for, and how your particular flute responds. I've heard that it's a good idea to practice playing as softly as you can in the second oct...
