Re: DanceMaster Accordions

I couldn't resist adding to your praise for Michael. I bought my Dancemaster C#/D from him after several long phone conversations about what I wanted in an accordion. He was indeed very patient and forthcoming, and refused to sell me anything until I'd done more research and listened to recordings o...

Re: Notable Box Music of 2008

I watched the Comhaltas clips Of Damien M. earlier this year and was also impressed with his playing, so will have to try to find the tg4 clip (aggravatingly slow to connect there with our server.) Not strictly accordion, but last night we saw the group Bua (formerly GanBua) and picked up their new ...

Thanks for the links - plenty to look through on both. Will, I already had a bookmark to your excellent site, only must remember to check it more often.

Re: Notable Box Music of 2008

Thanks! Two are better than none at all, and traditional Irish is what I'm most interested in.

Notable Box Music of 2008

It's been pretty quiet lately, so I'll ask this. What are some good button accordion cds that have been released this year? I'd like to hear about either solo playing or with groups. Here in the backwaters of the midwest it's hard to ferret out this information.

Thanks very much,

Slides

Thank you, Free Feet. I will look for some audio of those slides. In our summer Irish Session Tunes class we learned some jigs, reels, a slip jig and a highland, but no slides. I felt like I improved my listening skills in this class. Each evening we worked on a tune, piece by piece, then put all th...

Slides

Please post some slide suggestions to this thread. I've been wanting to add a slide or so to my tunes for my accordion.

Thanks!

Ah, it's somewhat comforting, and yet vaguely disturbing to learn that even you more seasoned box players have these "Dark Nights of the Soul". It's just short of a year since I started down this path. As a newer player I've asked some questions and gotten some very useful replies here. Af...

Brock McGuire Band

I just have to let off a little enthusiasm after the wonderful concert last night in Columbia, MO. Despite the bad weather and poor road conditions, the Brock McGuire Band made it into town and warmed up the evening for all who made it to the show. Wow, all the musicians were great. Paul Brock was a...

Terrific explanation, Steve. That does help quite a lot. Also increases my appreciation for the skill that goes into crafting a good accordion.

Thanks from me as well for the good explanation of the stops, Steve. I finally understand. Could I ask what is meant by swing tuning, as well as musette? The Serenellini which I borrowed for a time was musette. It had a definite distinctive sound which I can't describe. The Brock McGuire Band will g...

Will his class be concertina & accordion combined? I didn't see an accordion class listed in the offerings.

Using the Bass Buttons

Nate - You're right about the Hanrahan book. After I got over the switch from B/C to C#/D, I decided the principles would be the same for either box.

So I'll just keep on working on the right side and mess with the bass side when I take a notion.

Thanks!

New Player Suggestions

Nate & Steve - Thanks for the additional tips. Actually I was aware of the 23 buttons, as Michael pointed that feature out when we talked about his Dancemasters. I hadn't thought of the right-handed chord idea - shows how green I am. I have been incorporating button number three in my runs up an...
