Re: Camping for Catskills
I can't comment much on the camping situation in the area (I stayed at a nearby friend's house), but when I attended in 2013 I found the teachers EXCELLENT and the venues DEPLORABLE. Most of the venues were originally built in the Catskill's vacation heyday back in the 1950-60's and have had only sp...

Re: Tuning
It is always better to contact the maker first since they know more about what to do than the general public. As I explained to Casey in my followup email, I was loath to contact him first since I figured it could still be a experience/embouchure issue on my end. I certainly wouldn't want to waste ...

Re: Tuning
Lots of flutes have the lowest D slightly flat so you can "honk" it into tune Well, this D is a bit more than slightly flat; it's in the C# range. , so I suspect the quick answer to your question is" "practice". That would probably cure the upper octave, too, but... How lon...

Tuning
I've got a Folk Flute so I know my tuning options are limited. However, D is so flat it almost registers as C#. d (second octave) is pretty close to being right on so any variation I can easily believe is due to my embouchure. The third octave (when I can get that high) is all sharp. Now, a couple o...

Re: Classical vs Irish flute lessons
At the risk of being a "wet blanket", just because you've located a session doesn't mean you will locate lessons. A session isn't practice time (except for learning to play in a session) and while it's good to go to see how they work and listen to how the music is played, there may not be ...

Re: James Galway & Matt Molloy discuss flutes
The part I found especially funny was that Matt needed the keys on the wooden flute to be able to play a chromatic scale. Never mind the fact that JG's flute is covered in nothing but keys!

Re: Boxwood Futures for Folk Flutes
I hope someday to have the funds to purchase one of your folk flutes. After several attempts at saving for a FF over the past 10 years I finally managed to buy one about 1-1/2 ago. Of course in the end I had to save even more since the price went up over those 10 years (go figure :) ) But don't giv...

Re: Hearing question
Actually, that's what I was wondering and going to suggest. I know my friend who was playing the Great Highland Bagpipes wore ear plugs when he was playing regular gigs and therefore practicing frequently.jim stone wrote:I can play mando loud if I wear ear plugs.

Awesome! I bet I can forge one of those for my friend who does woodturning. That'd be a slick project!

Re: Nathaniel's Flute Progression
It's getting there - can I suggest that you sit upright with your head up and on a chair rather than a sofa - breathing is a major part of flute playing and sitting in a correct position will help IMHO. When I was starting, I was so focused on getting notes out consistently that I would unconscious...

Ah! There's precedent for that. That same process was how we got a 'pair of pant(aloon)s'.Peter Duggan wrote:IMHO probably yes, being effectively short for 'foot (joint)s'.
