Tweety, welcome. What a wonderful community of fellow musicians you've chosen to join. I'm sure you, like many of us, will find yourself spending countless hours engaging in lively conversation, or lurking, here when you really should be doing something else entirely (perhaps schoolwork?). :) Enjoy!

I like Kubuntu. It's Ubuntu with KDE instead of GNOME. Both are very good, but I'm more comfortable with KDE. It's also very easy to update.

Andy Irvine - "Rain On The Roof". Typically brilliant playing from Andy on Mando, bouzouki and octave mando. It's available through his website. Also "How To Grow A Woman from the Ground" by Chris Thile. Great stuff.

I went through the same dilemma about three months ago. After getting some good tips from some very knowledgeable folks on this board, I settled on DADGAD and have been playing it exclusively now after about 25 years in standard tuning. It was a surprisingly easy transition. That's not to say it's p...

My cat, Buster, has never vomited on me. Near me, yes, but never on me. However, I love Buster's proud look, even standing just a bit taller, as he greets me first thing in the morning to present to me the fine gift of a mouse, dead, still containing most of it's parts (though some displaced). I don...

Cruise on down to Florida. We've got it. I haven't had it yet cause it's expensive. But I love Old English Ales. Great! As it happens my parents live in Florida and my birthday's coming up. I think I know what I'm asking for. It is expensive, and it's definitely a sipping beer (or more accura...

Thomas Hardy's Ale. I haven't had it for 15 years and don't know if it's still being made. I know they stopped production in '99 but hear that they've started up again. I can still vividly remember the thick, smooth, creamy brew.

Oliver Sacks: Music and the Brain

Anyone near The Abyssinian Baptist Church in NYC this evening may want to check out the Music and the Brain program. The event is sold out but they're providing a live video feed at the door (if I've read right). It seems to be based on his book Musicophilia , which I haven't read but have just orde...

I think "Dixie" was written pre-war, just barely pre-war, as a minstrel song. It then became a favorite of the Confederate troops. If that's true, it could be racially offensive on two points. Not saying whether it should be played or not. Just throwing more info out there. By the way, I u...

The amount of air I had to work with greatly increased when I quit smoking. When I went back to smoking, it immediately dropped back down. Hmm... maybe I need to think about quitting again. By the way, I smoke cigars, not cigarettes, but I don't think what you smoke makes a difference.
