FS: Rare Casey Burns Flute
This flute was my work horse for gigs for many years. It is a loud, sonorous flute that is very punchy, which is why I liked it. It is made of blackwood, has a lined head and tuning slide, and is of the large tone-hole design. I've asked Casey if he considers this to be modeled after a Pratten, and ...

Re: Changed my Embouchure. Tone is better, but notes are sharper
Do you think your observation in any way furthers the discussion? Yes. But I'm going to leave it there no matter what you say next. Very wise, Peter. For anyone else who cares to comment, let me ask a simple question: After I made my suggestion, what do you think would have made this thread go in a...

Re: Changed my Embouchure. Tone is better, but notes are sharper
But (being weak tea, indeed) I did think it worth observing that your previous post potentially met one of the three criteria you'd just quoted as absolving you. Well, I am the one being piled on, I think. At some point, it seems appropriate to ramp it up a notch. But "weak tea" is hardly...

Re: Changed my Embouchure. Tone is better, but notes are sharper
inflammatory I (unlike some on this site) don't feel the need to post on almost every thread. I confine my recommendations to areas where I have experience and expertise. Others would be advised ? Oh, Peter, Peter! If you consider that inflammatory, you are weak tea, indeed! Consider how many posts...

Re: Changed my Embouchure. Tone is better, but notes are sharper
Please don't use my post as a means to continue your spat with someone else. I made my observation without any implied reference to any earlier post - I was commenting purely on what I have noticed myself in relation to changing embouchure, because I thought it relevant to the original topic. First...

Re: Changed my Embouchure. Tone is better, but notes are sharper
There's another factor that affects the embouchure/tone question. When we go through one of those episodes (which we all do, don't we?) of analysis & experiment to correct or improve the sound, our concentration and application increase and we spend more time working on the sound itself rather ...

Re: Changed my Embouchure. Tone is better, but notes are sharper
Ho hum. Can't read, won't read. That probably goes for the authoritative explanatory material suggested too. I'll leave our peers to judge who's been making most sense here. There is no surprise that initially Ballygo has found it harder to get a strong low D, notwithstanding the known beneficial e...

Re: Tuning problems
In my experience this is not true Cubitt, sometimes when I try some flute I can get a good tone right away, but it might take some little extra time to get it in tune on all notes. This also happens when I close the tuning slide of my flute all the way in (it's usually 1,5 cm or more out, being an ...

Re: Changed my Embouchure. Tone is better, but notes are sharper
"He also did not say or imply that changing the stopper setting "allowed" him to close up the slide, just that he did both things and then addressed himself to blowing technique." Correction: He said he did both things and that solved the problem. He addressed blowing technique i...

Re: Changed my Embouchure. Tone is better, but notes are sharper
Thank you all for your contributions. Jemtheflute I moved the cork to 21mm and moved the tuning slide back in. This seems to have sorted the problem. I am getting a weaker low D but I'm still playing around with it. - a little ambiguous, granted, but exactly what I advocated (and kinda addressed at...

Re: Changed my Embouchure. Tone is better, but notes are sharper
Distortingly selective quotation/deliberate mis-reading is an interesting tactic. Horses to water, none so blind, etc. Jem, spare me. Nothing selective about it. What I quoted are complete sentences that stand on their own. Come on, guy! He adjusted the cork AND MOVED THE TUNING SLIDE IN. Isn't tha...

Re: Changed my Embouchure. Tone is better, but notes are sharper
Tune sharper? You kept the darn thing jacked all the way in! Peri, let me try again. I had to have the head all the way in to get 440. Therefore, if I were playing with someone tuned sharper than that, I could not go any further in to make the flute sharper. By taking the cork from 27mm to 23mm, I ...
