I made this out of some dowels stuck in a piece of wood. The base is from a desk-top mic stand base. Very heavy and sturdy and can't be knocked over even when the stand is full of whistles and flutes.

Re: Flute rests for players with hand problems
Jem is eluding to something important here. Rather than trying various random gizmos, the first thing to do is isolate precisely where you have pain (I'm sure you know that); but the next part can be subtile... What exactly is causing the stress that is leading to the pain in that particular spot. W...

Re: flute and whistle swab
Here's what you need and all your problem will be solved http://home.nethere.net/roger45/index.htm I have been using the flute flag for years. It's an elegant design that works well for conical bore flutes and fits right in the case. When the two pieces of the handle are screwed together it is long ...

Re: A wooden flute maintenance question
I see implied in some of these responses is the assumption that you take the flute apart in order to swab it. If, however, you get one of those "flute flags" (http://home.nethere.net/roger45/fluteflaga.htm) you can swab your instrument without taking it apart. I've used these for years and...

Re: Flute Case Option
Hey Colomon, I completely get owning whistles in all those different keys; but I'm curious what kind of a session or music do you play to need to carry all those everywhere. If you have a C and D that covers pretty much everything played in a session. I have a band and the singers sometimes need to ...

Re: Getting a second flute - C or F?
I have both a C (McGee keyless) and an F (Sweetheart). I play in a band and play the C a lot. Some of those Am tunes are so much easier on a C flute. We also have a singer who sings a lot of songs in C and F (which are easy on a C flute). It even works for the occasional Bb song. The F I got cheaply...

An update to the session info in Honolulu. The session are now held at Anna O'Brien's Pub Upstairs (2440 S. Beretania St.: 946-5190) on the 1st and 3rd Sundays from 5-8pm or so. Re: New to C&F- Has anyone tried Heritage Music flutes?
Hey Paris - welcome. My two cents is that if you want to learn to play Irish music (and it's not clear from your post whether you are interested in Irish music) on an Irish flute then get a REAL Irish flute. By real I mean one in D with tone holes and embouchure kind of "standard". Now I h...

Re: mic for whistle?
I use a Boss reverb unit when I play whistle (into a mic I share with my flute). Just tap the button with my foot and the signal is boosted a bit while the reverb blunts most tendency to whistle shrillness. Be conservative with the settings. You are going for a pleasant depth and thickness without b...

Re: Old Whistle ID wanted
It was found in a yard in Lansing Michigan, USA. The pics were passed on to me by an instrument repair tech friend who works in that area - she knows I play whistle. Fun little mystery.

Old Whistle ID wanted
Just a curiosity moment. This whistle was found buried in a yard along with a 1901 penny. The first pic is as it came out of the ground and the second is with a little cleaning. It seems to be brass and has a lead fipple (now melted). While no name was found, a small bird is etched into it which you...

Ah good to know. Cocobolo then. The wood is reddish, but the whole thing plays nicely.
