Re: My new McDonagh Bb fife may be the missing link...

In his comment above, RudallRose mentioned that fife-maker Roy Seaman originally built piccolos. This brings me to a burning question... Where is the piccolo in the general scheme of things, i.e. in comparison to a flute or a fife? And are they normally in one particular key, as Bb seems to predomin...

My new McDonagh Bb fife may be the missing link...

Late last fall, I had decided that my D flute was not giving access to enough other keys for my playing style, which is mainly accompanying t.v. and movie soundtracks. To remedy, I ordered a six-key delrin D from Dave Copley. Well, at least I put my name on the list. By March though, with the econom...

My new Copley & Boegli F flute is a gas!

Built (mostly) by Alan Copley in delrin, I knew I was missing out, but I had no idea how much. I'll admit my playing time is non-trad, mostly accompanying movie and t.v. soundtracks. Up until now, I had been attempting this with only a D flute. I had mentioned in an earlier post that this new F flut...

Re: WTB...an F flute in delrin

It took all of about a day and a half to "get it". The F requires much more of an ab workout. As Dave himself mentioned in an email... "Yes, a very different experience from playing a D flute. The basic design is a copy of a late 1800's flute made by Hawkes and Son and owned by John S...

Re: WTB...an F flute in delrin

My new Copley F in delrin. It's sweet, but a different animal altogether. That upper register is challenging! I understand that Dave's son Alan was instrumental in the project. Having Dave as a mentor couldn't possibly hurt. Well, I was going to post a photo, but couldn't figure it out. It looks jus...

Re: WTB...an F flute in delrin

I just heard from Dave Copley that he and his son are working on a batch of D and F flutes in delrin, and should have one available in just a few weeks.

Re: What is your next favorite flute key after D?

Well, I think I've decided on the F. I couldn't decide and was actually going to try whichever came available first, the Eb or the F. But I do believe the F will be more useful.

I'll post another thread, but if anyone has an F flute in delrin that they might want to part with, please pm me.

Re: What is your next favorite flute key after D?

Thanks to everyone for the great suggestions. Right now, due to my odd playing habits, I'm leaning toward the Eb or the F. I think the F would be more useful, with both the F and strong Bb, (But no Eb note...darn). But I'm a little concerned about being pitched a little too high with the F, whereas ...

What is your next favorite flute key after D?

I had originally planned on a six-key flute in order to expand my key possibilities, but current finances have taken a "mysterious" dive. So, a much less expensive solution would be to add a second flute. For the most part, my practice consists of playing along with tv/movie soundtracks. U...
