Just to put the record straight, I was never an apprentice of Alain Froment. I did buy my lathe from him and he gave me a few hours to show me how it worked and how to bore and ream a chanter. I am very grateful for the time he gave me but overall it amounted to probably no more than nine or ten hou...

Hi Frank, Sorry about the reeds! I think really that reeds need to be made in the area in which they are to be played and may not travel very well irrespective of what they are made of. I still prefer both the sound and feel of an elder reed and have not made a cane chanter reed for ten years. Howev...

Obviously you pay for the skilled labour and not materials. A full set takes between 4 to 6 weeks. A good reed can take days and costs around 50, euros. Personnally my hourly rate is considerably less than a plumber, builder, or a teacher. Get your plumber to work for you every day for 6 weeks and s...

I started off this thread trying to sell a chanter hich incidentally is still for sale :) ! However I seem to have opened a can of worms! I speak only from the point of view of the small craftman, one man making uilleann pipes. I am aware of Froment's involvement with Hevia. With all due respect , J...

Hi Elbogo, I am in fact still alive! For staining boxwood I put lots of little bits of copper into the acid, no water, and off it goes. This is done in a container with a glass top so I can watch it happening. After that, into linseed oil for three days. I learnt this by the way from a certain Mr Wo...
