Just to reassure my buds at Clips and Snips, I put in a request for a C&S message board here, as well. (I asked before you did.) I was given the okay, by the way.

It's a good exercise to experiment with putting ornamentation into basic tunes, but it's also very instructive to see written ornamentation and try it out for a feel of what the pro's are doing, also.

If anyone know the story behind this tune title, I'd like to know: "The Banshee's Wail over the Mangle Pit." It's on Martin Hayes' "Under the Moon." What's a mangle pit, anyway? Sounds horrible.

wbb is a wide bore brass
(for future reference, wbbsp means wide bore brass session pro, which I think is the official designation, if not some combination of those words.):0 I think. (That may not be reassuring.)

Trip to Killaval/Morrison's Jig (from McCullough's 121)
Cooley's Reel seems to blend with a lot of stuff. The Cup of Tea/Cooley's/Pigeon on the Gate
My favorite is Dublin Reel/Wind that Shakes the Barley (Planxty's "Cold Blow and the Rainy Night" cd)

I have an old feadog head on a Clare 2-piece body for pocketability. I sometimes wonder if it's in tune with itself, but I haven't worried about it. I used to play it on my lunch breaks at work. Off this topic, I am totally enamoured of my Abell blackwood high D and a Burke wbb, and couldn't be both...

My favorite tune story is for (I think it's a jig) "Pull the Knife and Stick it Again." This witch would drop out of a tree onto your back as you passed by and utter a curse on you. If you stabbed her with your knife, it would lift the curse. However, if you pulled the knife out, the curse...

10 Penny Bit is an easy jig.
Cooley's Reel has a manageable rhythm.
They both sound good played slowly.
I'd start someone out on slow airs before tackling dance tunes, though. Popular, well-known melodies, such as Amazing Grace?

Tarbolon Reel (reel, Nico), which I transcribed to abc from "Willie Clancy's Dance Music of Ireland" has all of his ornamentation on paper, which is how I strived to learn it. If anyone wants, I'll repost the abc's. Anyway, I have a whole book of hard tunes to work through! I picked up an ...

I have a wide and a narrow bore brass Burke high D. The wide bore is louder, has more chiff (more breathy). The narrow bore has less chiff, a cleaner, purer tone. The mouthpiece is smaller and it clogs with condensation a lot. They are both nice sounds, but different. The narrow bore has a "sma...
