Re: Drone tuning slide question
I wonder if anyone has set made the way I described? I had Dave Williams drones that were made that way , the whole bottom section of the bass drone was made of tubing. RORY That's how my Dixon bass drone is too, the entire lower section is all brass tube (with some external wood ornaments) of the ...

Re: Pictures of Your Pipes
Very true that it varies across different pieces of wood, and certainly different species. Fine snakewood can have the figure shown in the Rogge set, and the same with some species of maple, such as in the Hubbert set. Even boxwood can have figure like that. Yes, in your picture of the box chanter, ...

Re: Pictures of Your Pipes
The flame pattern is in the wood itself, and will not fade. It may become less high-contrast if handled a lot over many many many years(from the oils on your hands) but it's not something that will 'rub off' or anything like that.DjUntzUntz wrote:

[quote="Mr.Gumby"]What your seeing is a product of the staining process, rolling the wood in hot sand, if I recall correctly, creating the stripy round pattern. quote] I believe the 'stripy' pattern is the natural figure of the flame maple used in the set, it's the same wood us violin make...

Re: Best fiddle strings for tuning down to B
Equally fair Mr. benhall.1 :) If I was only playing a tune or two in a different key or tunes all interspersed, I'd rather just transpose rather than make everyone wait for me to re-tune, plus scordatura puts a lot of extra stress and strain on strings, just like metal fatigue. If I'm tuning down, i...

Re: Best fiddle strings for tuning down to B
I do this occasionally while doing a solo gig, drop everything down to C# or C. I've gone lower, and the trick is having a set of strings that tunes to a fairly high tension. I've had great success with Pirastro Tonica strings; they don't break the bank, have a nice tone (perhaps not the most 'trad'...

Re: Low C# whistle makers?
Thank you for the list stanton135! I guess I never looked close enough on the Burke website to see that they made them, kind of embarrassing on my part really  As a young guy in high school, from about 2004-2007 I used to make whistles out of copper with hand turned wood fipples. I called my w...

Low C# whistle makers?
Like the topic title says, anyone know any makers making a good low C# whistle? I have a C# 'high' whistle I love to use when soloing, it's such a nice sounding key, but I'd be interested in picking up a low C# as well.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: Playing chanters of a different pitch on pipes
For years I've been really interested in the possibilities of pairing a chanter with a set of drones tuned a whole step above the chanter's bell note (such as D drones with a C chanter) to allow the drone effect for tunes in the minor mode of the chanter's supertonic. Does anyone know of any videos ...

Yes.
Good questions! Now you've given me something to think about today, maybe I'll stop back later and post a few ideas.

Re: Pictures of Your Pipes
Lovely stuff, Titus, congratulations! Just practice a lot and sweat on that pear side and it will match the plum side in no time  Seriously beautiful pipes! How do you like the 'tuning slide' for the reed? I think that's such an awesome idea. Does it work as well as would be expected, and does ...

Re: Maker of Drones w/Northumbrian-style Pins
I'm not sure of the particular conversation/thread you're mentioning, but I know there are several makers that have furnished this type of drone. I know others will chime in with who they know, but I know with certainty that Bruce Childress can make one of these, he's actually working on one right n...
