Re: So, what is this then?

The notation at the base of fingering charts suggests that melodies can be played in parallel thirds - sixths (inverted thirds) at left and tenths (thirds + an octave) at the right. I'd love to see the other possibilities. But not enough to fork out 160 quid for the privilege.

Thank you Kenny. Nice whistle playing and a Reavy tune you don't often hear (I never have, in fact!). :)

CP: Siamsa Céilí Band of Montréal

Hi gang. I could be mistaken, but I don't believe I've ever made a commercial post in the 20-odd years I've been lurking here. This is just a wee plug for a mini-album I and my bandmates recorded just before Christmas. There's not a great deal of whistle playing on it, but what there is very good (o...

Re: Cuts on second octave

If you have found techniques that work best, why ask others? I mean, nothing anyone else says can improve on "best." :) The whistle you are playing may make a difference. On the ones I use, I have never encountered any difficulty cutting the second octave D with the "G finger" (t...

Re: Timeline of Whistle Makers?

My source was a presentation given by John Skelton. I assume it's true but it might not be. It's also possible I'm not remembering it correctly. It is true they were available in C only for a long time, a D was (re)introduced some time during the eighties (? I remember them coming in but not quite ...

Re: 2020 Tin Whistle Enthusiasts Q & A

Let's call in Jackie? We used to do this one after he introduced it to us: The New Land Lovely tune, but is it perky? If you want a lively minor waltz (I'm told it fits into the valse java category), may I shamelessly suggest this composition of mine, in Bm, played here by Winifred Horan et al . (S...

Re: 2 strathspeys on John Sindt "D" whistle

Lovely playing - Col Fraser is so convincing you have me wondering whether your speculative reworking isn't in fact evidence of the tune's true origin. :) Good joke, too.

I think that's a link to your Dropbox home page. If you want to post a link that anyone can follow, right-click (or equivalent Mac gesture) on the file in your Dropbox folder (the folder on your hard drive, not the folder on the web page) and choose "Copy Dropbox link".

Yes, I understood perfectly well what you were saying. Did you understand my answer though? :)

Re: Tonguing technique

when tonguing to seperate 2 off the same note am i looking for a brief pause inbetween the same notes, like a split second off a pause. You could be onto something there. For years I couldn't understand why I couldn't get students to produce the articulation I wanted with tonguing in certain places...

Re: Colin Goldie alto/mezzo G sizes

Thanks! All of that confirms what I was expecting. I don't know what the bore of Goldie's A whistles are, but as I said I always prefer a bore a hair on the narrow side. I don't have a proper instrument for measuring the bore but squinting with a ruler I'd say my Goldie G whistle is near enough 15 ...

Re: Colin Goldie alto/mezzo G sizes

I am the proud owner of one of the first two narrow-bore Gs that Colin made. (I'm pretty sure Brian Finnegan got the other.) It has the same bore as the A whistle I already had. Both instruments are very good indeed. [ramble alert] I got the G whistle when we met up with Colin and Brigitte in Britta...

Re: Technique - Ornamentation vs. Tonguing

Am I misunderstanding the group of three notes with the number '3' over them to not be a triplet? And to achieve differentiation of those three notes you might play small gracenotes in between OR tongue each individual note? I've used both methods on different instruments requiring different techni...
