Re: Ebay Items
Thanks. I see similarities in the chanter and the wooden piece that connects the hose to the bag to those made by Robbie Hughes, but the case is Pakistani and there are sets on eBay from Pakistan that look a lot like these (especially the chanter, waist belt and wooden connector between hose and bag...

For what it's worth, I wouldn't bother to remove the value if it's working fine.

Re: Maker of Gaita asturiana
The tool usually used to remove them is a small metal hook. It may take a bit of a pull to get it out. The handle on the other end is then used to tap it back into place.

Re: Drones and keys - conneciton beetwen them
Lulu, the Dm is the relative minor of F. The standard C gaita is usually played in C and F, so Dm and Am would also be possibilities, although I don't think I've played any tunes in Am. What specific tune are you playing? But no matter which of those keys you're playing, you won't change the tuning ...

Re: Bagpipe mute!
An Asturian gaitero I know does something similar. He opens his case (a soft, padded case) and plays inside the case. I think he also removed the top section of the drone, so he retained some drone sound, but it was also muffled. This arrangement is free and works well enough that he could play on a...

Re: Maker of Gaita asturiana
That turning is unusual. Chus knows gaitas well, so he's probably right about it being one of Diogene's. Contemporary Asturian gaita drones typically have a "válvula" (valve) in the stock. This regulates the air flow. When we used the older drone reeds made from cane, if you let up on the ...

Re: Maker of Gaita asturiana
That is an unusual turning on the stock or chanter. Which piece is it on?
It doesn't look like Praviano's, so maybe it is by Diogenes.
There's no marking at all on the gaita, except for the reeds?

Re: Maker of Gaita asturiana
Where did you buy it, Michael? Muiño is a Galician maker of payones/drone reeds. The Asturian gaitas usually use a synthetic Galician reed these days. The odd thing is that because of the physical differences in the Galician and Asturian gaitas, the Asturian C roncón don't usually use a C payón/dron...

To get to the stopper, you'll probably have to twist off the end cap. If it's like mine, it's a very tight fit. I did move mine and got a bit better sound.
I hadn't considered the possibility that Kevin wasn't going for an Irish flute sound. Maybe that's why the volume is lower.

Yep, but gaitas are fairly easy to come by. It's the other gaita players I miss having around!
