Re: Brad Anderson Whistles

Update:
I just did a search to see if I could figure out his username here and ran across this thread that indicates he stopped making whistles in 2011.

Re: Brad Anderson Whistles

Unless I’m mistaking him for someone else, he tends to make them in batches and then puts them all up together in a commercial post here. The few I’ve tried were all good whistles. My only complaint was that he used wood for the fipple plug which I found a bit annoying. It probably wouldn’t bother m...

Yep, it was a fail on multiple levels. I blame the beer as my defense. :D

Re: Received my Freeman Mellow Dog - I have a question.

I really should get a blackbird. On the Mellowdog / Susato front, I really love having both. My much-loved and twice-repaired mellowdog feels so responsive and sweet, but not sine-wavey. The susato is just a beast, resistant to wind, weather, and spilled beer. But thirty years of saxophone playing ...

Re: Is the craft of flute making "critically endangered"?

I do occasionally worry that many of the top makers (Burns, Copley, McGee, Olwell, etc) are in their 60’s or older. But I have faith that the next generation won’t fail us when that day comes. I’m happy in particular that Pat Olwell has a son that’s learning the tricks of the trade from his dad. Muc...

Re: My embarrassing reading comprehension fail

Could have been worse. At least I never accidentally said a tune was called My Darling’s a Sheep.

My embarrassing reading comprehension fail

I thought some of you might get a laugh from this. A couple of months ago after playing a set at the session, someone asked what the tune name was. I responded “The Maid of Monte Crisco.” I was quickly corrected with “it’s feckin Mount Kisco!” That’s when I realized I’d been mentally thinking of it ...

Re: why no flute in Appalachian music?

It was absolutely gender specific where I grew up in Alabama. I was in symphonic, marching, and jazz band classes all through high school, as a tenor sax player. Here’s how it broke down: Girls only: flute, clarinet Boys only: tuba, drums Everything else could go either way, but generally the larger...

Re: Gene Milligan High D best of all...

Opinions are like ***holes, everybody has one, but I agree. I like my “quiet head” Milligan more than a friend’s Abell. With the recent couple of threads regarding the Mellow Dog being airy, I’ve considered recommending Milligan. Mine played very much like my Mellow Dog, but with a more pure tone. B...

Heck, I’ve been meaning to get a Blackbird ever since I gave my Bluebird to my sister-in-law. If you buy it and decide not to keep it I’d buy it from you.

Re: Killarney, easy to overblow?

Yeah, it takes a lighter touch than a Milligan, which requires leaning in more.
Just stick with practicing and in time your mind will subconsciously make those micro-adjustments needed btwn whistles. It’ll just become automatic, kinda like muscle memory.

Re: The Next Great Flute Maker?

Let’s not overlook Casey Burns. I sometimes feel he gets overlooked because he spends so much time filling the budget flute niche and isn’t exclusively pumping out $2000 flutes.

Re: Best maintained inexpensive whistle standards?

I see it's open season on Generation whistles again. On different forums and boards so many of the comments are just second hand anecdotes, received wisdom and repeated gossip, none of which match up with my own experience with Generation whistles. Yes, someone somewhere has had a "bad Generat...

Re: Best maintained inexpensive whistle standards?

These moulds wear out over time, and I wish the companies would put more effort into maintaining or replacing the moulds when they start to wear out. My understanding is that Jerry Freeman won’t even try to tweak the current Gens because what they’re putting out is too subpar to do much with.
