FS: Custom banjo pot SOLD

I’ve posted about this originally about a year ago, that my friend who is a luthier was going to build me a neck for this banjo rim that would be a tenor/cello hybrid tuned CGDAE. Unfortunately due to Covid things never got off the ground, and he has abandoned instrument making due to homeschooling ...

Re: Got this banjo pot yesterday for a custom project

Hi, So this project fell apart thanks to Covid (my luthier friend is now homeschooling his kids), and I am now looking to upgrade my 8-string octave mandolin to a 10-string bouzouki/cittern. I’m looking to sell this pot along with the head and hardware (everything seen in the above picture). I’m not...

Re: Unique, homemade original instruments.

Well, this isn’t a foreign concept, but I’m not sure if it’s been done with a banjo. The rim and hardware are together, I’m just waiting for my luthier friend to have the time to build the neck. It’ll be a tenor/cello hybrid, 5 strings tuned CGDAE. I’ll probably call it a baritone banjo for simplici...

Re: Looking for a tune recommendation

Yeah, I figure tunes that go beyond the low G to high B range are extremely rare, but I figured there’s got to be something, even if it’s from an album from a fiddle virtuoso that likes to move up from first position. I really want to be able to showcase this banjo with a tune that requires fretting...

Looking for a tune recommendation

Hi, can anyone recommend to me some tunes that either go below low G or above high B? I’m having a custom 5-string cello/tenor banjo built (CGDAE) and would like a good tune that utilizes all 5 strings. If it’s a tune that goes above B I’ll just transpose it all down a string so that I can utilize a...

Re: Got this banjo pot yesterday for a custom project

Clawhammerists often seek a “plunky” tone rather than a bright one, so I guess that reduction in note separation could contribute to that. As a side note, Old Time clawhammer banjo was actually my gateway to ITM, and when I bought my tenor banjo I decided to implement a plunkier sound rather than go...

Re: Got this banjo pot yesterday for a custom project

Haven't seen that before. Am I right in guessing that the resonator is built kind of like a toroid-type ring mold? I’d never heard of that, but after a little reading it does sound like a similar process. As for how it applies to a banjo, it’s meant to boost volume and sustain. But with this comes ...

Got this banjo pot yesterday for a custom project

I had this made by banjo luthier Zach Hoyt. It has a 12” diameter rather than the 11” that most banjos have. It also has something called an internal resonator. These are mostly used by makers of openback 5-string banjos meant for “Old Time” clawhammer playing. The rim is maple, and the resonator is...

Re: 2020 Tin Whistle Enthusiasts Q & A

Talent becomes a crutch if it leads to complacency in other areas, is what I’m getting at. And I do still love whistle, and you’re correct, I do need to stay polished enough for proper teaching. But at this point my teaching has evolved into a slow session, which is about 50/50 teachers and players ...

Re: 2020 Tin Whistle Enthusiasts Q & A

I imagine my answers will be very different from most, especially considering this is a site devoted to the whistle more than any other instrument (I guess flute is almost equal here, in reality). 1. What did you accomplish on whistle in 2019? A couple of things. First of all, I became a teacher. On...

Re: Matt Molloy...flute?

I do have an Audio Technica, but it’s the L60, the base model. I’ve looked into upgrading eventually (maybe an Orbit), but I’m not sure I’ll worry about that as a factor. I have plenty of digital music I can and do use for accompaniment practice.

Re: Matt Molloy...flute?

Recordings, especially the older ones, are such a pain to try to use as an accompaniment tool. I bought a decent quantity of old vinyl a while back and tried to play along on bouzouki, but found that I had to make micro-changes to the tuning, and every track was different than the one before. And it...
