Re: My new Generation Bb brass whistle

It' s your fingering. You got five fingers moving all at once; they're not gonna go in sync until you've practiced. I still have that problem.

Here's a hint- OOOXXX, OOOOXX, and OOOOOX with also make a good A. Less fingers :D

Re: Harmonica players

Sacred Harp. Really? I can just imagine a room full of people playing 4 part hymns, and humming syllables into their instruments. :o OTOH, I guess any harmonica played in a church is a sacred harp. LOL. very true. Nah, I wouldn't dare bring it to a singing, but the tunes sit real well on harm...

Re: tunes with leaps

Mason's Apron, for the starting notes... it's simple, even if you do the full octave leap and not some filler notes, but it's easy to screw up too. the jumps in the second part can be challenging too.

Re: cooleys reel

If I have a tune/melody/note sequence that does not span to much of the whistles range, then could I just play it in each of the modes by moving the start note (and all others) up one hole? I could then see if I could get a different mood feeling for each mode? Would any note sequences be more appr...

Re: Should I stay or should I go now?

It wouldn't be a bad thing to learn to read music, and notated Irish music is not that difficult at all. You've already got the ear-learning down, and I think all the disadvantages of learning by paper (if there actually are any) are for people who don't already play by ear. Since you can do that al...

Except for the facts that none of the buses were running, there were major tube delays/train cancellations and That's the part I found weird. When weather gets rough in the winter here in Chicago its the buses, subways, and commuter trains that everyone turns to. No matter how bad it gets, the buse...

Re: wooden flute care question

Go pick up one of those thermal/cold lunch bags and toss a warming gel heat packs you used for warming hands in pockets in there. You live in Chicago, I know you know what those are. A thermal lined bag may be enough to keep the temps averaged out though. Its just a thought. Oooh, nice idea. I know...

wooden flute care question

I got a flute being delivered this week... old German flute. Very excited about it. However, for safety I had it delivered to work. I walk to work- it's about a mile from home. I'd probably be taking it home wednesday evening- expecting a low of 15 for that day. I could arrange for someone to pick m...

Re: Learning New Settings of Tunes?

The question, it seems to me, is whether to spend more time learning multiple stylistic approaches, or a large catalog of tunes in a style that comes naturally to you, based on early learnings or exposures. I disagree here. I'd say that on the contrary, just like many tunes can fit a single player'...
