Re: My goodness, is it really that bad?

Our cats are pretty much indifferent to anything I play. I am more likely to meet opposition from my wife and daughter. :D

The cats are mostly interested in "persuading" me to give them my attention :poke:

Re: Portable recording device

I have an Edirol R09. More expensive than the Zoom H2 and about the same price as a Zoom H4. They were more expensive still when I bought it as they were the only quality "pocket" recorders available at the time. I have been more than satisfied with it. I don't know how its feature set com...

Audacity. It's free and does everything I want.

Re: Camcorder video formats

I have a Panasonic Camcorder that creates files with a .MOD extension. The VLC media player has always played them OK as has the Linux Totem Movie Player, but my computer (Running Ubuntu Linux) has always assumed the format to be an audio one. The renaming has worked for me as I now get a thumbnail ...

Re: boehm / simple system ?

Wood or Silver? - Why? Simple or Boehm? Why did you choose the system you did? What makes it a better system than the other (for traditional music)? What is the most important aspect of the debate to you? What you're used to / Fingering / Tone / Ornamentation / Tradition / Aesthetics / Other? It ch...

I'll also agree about the Dixon A. I have a polymer one and I like the breathy tone.

If you want something loud and inexpensive, then a Susato is as good as any.

Re: Baroque Recorder Forum?

First of all, I am going to state the obvious, but it is a point worth stressing: The recorder is NOT the flute. It is a different instrument. If you are going to learn the recorder, you need to be clear about this from the beginning. There are similarities in the fingering and in the timbre of the ...

Re: Improving my whistle recording setup

I use an Edirol R09. More expensive than the Zoom, but it was what was available at the time and it produces excellent results. I had tried several cheaper "voice recorders" but the results were dreadful and like others had had problems with hum recording direct to the PC. In the end I cou...

Re: What slow tune would you recommend I learn next?

I don't play much 'dance music' (jigs and reels and such) because they do not enthuse me to play (or, to be honest to listen over much). I picked up the low whistle because I like slow haunting music. There may be a subconscious awareness of my lack of skill driving these choices, but I am not sure...

Re: What slow tune would you recommend I learn next?

Neil Gow's Lament On The Death Of His Second Wife Ooh yes, I was going to suggest that earlier but I thought the discussion had finished. I play it in G on a D whistle but bought a Dixon A in case I ever meet a friendly fiddler to play it with - and to play along with fiddle recordings. That's what...

Two Scottish tunes

Da Slockit Light: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ay0SQ29MdTY

Hector the Hero: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCwut-wg7fE

Both will sound really well on the low whistle. I play them on the flute.

Re: 09/14/09 Digerspolkan, Our Kate

Beautiful tune, David. Is it what you'd call a Northumbrian tune? I mean, it's been composed by someone from there, but is it also in the trad. Northumbrian style? Kathryn is steeped in the Northumbrian tradition. Not only is she a superb piper, but also a fine fiddler as well. This tune while mode...
