pipe and whistle techniques
I have only dabbled with whistle in private but recently came into possession of a decent whistle which is encouraging me to take the instrument a bit more seriously. I've overheard comments about piper's who "play whistle with piping ornaments" I'm not sure what was meant by that since th...

Re: Back D triplet.
I was told I had to move the thumb in a figure eight motion with the tip of the thumb. Didn't work for me, I use the whole thumb up and down technique.

Tuner Question
As a concertina player, my involvement in tuning has been to play an A for the rest of the session to tune to. One of my biggest learning curves is ow hearing the out of tune and knowing which tuning slide needs attention. My ear is improving and will be the ultimate solution, but I use a digital tu...

Re: Piping for Irish Step Dancing
The divide between music and dance is disheartening , two years ago at an Irish hosted house party here in California we had the areas best musicians, but the step dance teacher used a boom box. three weeks ago, same party, location and mostly same musicians the ceili dancers had no problem with us,...

Re: Unusual Session Instruments.
at one local session we have the melodica, what a strange sound, cheap reeds I would guess and the plastic body doesn't help much.
At another session we have dobro, rather two, though one hardly ever plays a note..

Re: dealing with F natural
thanks for your thoughts folks. My concert pitch chanter has no Fnat key, the C chanter does, so I try to work both as if there was no key so don't get confused. Sometimes, like the third part of Flogging Reel, just a lift with a bit of half hole is more than enough for the effect. Not so with this ...

dealing with F natural
On this third part of Luck Penny there is the F natural, twice X:1 T: Luck Penny (third part) M:6/8 R: K:G |:dBG GFG|DGB dBG|cA=F FEF|C=FA cBA| dBG GBd|g2g fd^c|def gdB|1 cAF GBc:|2 cAF G2A|| On other tunes where I encounter the Fnat I've been able to find a work around. I was wondering if anyone ha...

Re: size of repertoire
"There is nothing wrong with session playing, its just that we shouldn't consider it as the pinnacle of piping." I would say this is true of any instrument. I think the best of recorded music is at most a duet. With a few exceptions, of course. I've just moved to a new city, the few people...

Re: Amazing Grace, long version?
Thanks for the input, fellow pipers. I did as PJ suggested, and continued turning things on and off, for almost 20 minutes. My first paid gig in my new hometown. Since memorials are mostly what I've been asked about thus far, and only this one didn't want the warpipes, I will see about adding the ex...

Amazing Grace, long version?
I was booking a 15 minute gig for a funeral, the client asked me if I knew the longer version of Amazing Grace. I've found one expanded version by a piano player on youtube, but it certainly isn't pipe friendly. Anyone have any ideas whai he might have been talking about? While attempting to locate ...

Re: Kelleher bags - which shape
consider making your own vinyl bag. It's easy and allows you to make a comfortable shape and educate yourself about these things. I am finding length of neck to have a effect on how things fit, as much as actual bag dimensions. Easy instuctions online, use 3M 5200 adhesive, slow cure, though it take...

Re: Busking and playing UP's outside.
My experience is similar to above, but I have a fun story to tell. I got my flat 3/4 set at the SF Toinil mid February. When St Patrick's day rolled around I decided to go play in front of a local diner with an Irish name, they served the traditional Irish breakfast with the usual Yankee fare in a l...
