Catskills Irish Arts Week registration is now open

I was waiting a while for it to go live, but it's up now at http://www.catskillsirishartsweek.com

I remember many years ago meeting some Chiffers there, although work and nonwork have recently prevented me from going.

They can 3D print wood now!

Great news for sustainable production of, perhaps, such as wooden flutes: Unlike particle board or laminate, the grain goes fully through the material, so it can be sanded and refinished like wood. A product like a chair or bowl can also be printed in its finished form, without waste. It’s also poss...

I hereby announce the autocomplete tune name challenge

Last week I was looking for the Maids of Mitchelstown, and Google helpfully suggested "maids near me" --- I thought that "The Maids Near Me" would be a nice tune name. I then went about starting some tune names in Google to see what came out by autocomplete. I got: The New Copper...

Re: Music Theory for trad players

Why would a "whistle and fiddle player" who is "advanced" need "music theory" if you've managed to get to "advanced" without it ? I can think of a few reasons. First, the word "mixolydian" is fun to say. Mixolydian. Mixolydian. Second, it helps with...

Re: Happy St Paddy's

We just did our gig at the local Irish pub, who has hosted our session every wednesday. Already done for today, kicking back at home with a beer or three, local newspapers already reporting that "the guy with the concertina is gone, you can all go outside now." We're going to have the trad...

Re: My embarrassing reading comprehension fail

I thought some of you might get a laugh from this. A couple of months ago after playing a set at the session, someone asked what the tune name was. I responded “The Maid of Monte Crisco.” I was quickly corrected with “it’s feckin Mount Kisco!” Well, is there a Mount Kisco sandwich? Is there? No? Th...

Re: Playing Irish Music on Anglo Concertina

Then why worry about bad habits if you're not serious? Well, even if you're not serious, you want to make sure you get the most oomph out of the thing. And if you're even half-serious about playing the C/G Anglo concertina then you'll want a three row concertina, with at least 26 buttons and couple...

Re: Justice for Turing

Incidentally, if you want a very lucid explanation of what Turing really did, a great book on cryptography for the layperson is The Code Book by Simon Singh. I actually teach an undergraduate course in cryptography (my next lecture is at 3:30) and I've seen a lot of both textbooks and regular books....

Re: Justice for Turing

While we may not know the cause of death for absolute certain, we do know that he was prosecuted, his security clearance was revoked, and he was forced to undergo hormone treatments that screwed up his body. Suicide seems the short-odds explanation, but even it it wasn't, there is still much to apol...

Re: Children of Men

It occurred to me that in any other movie, the car would start on the second try. Usually when a car doesn't start the first time, everyone knows that the protagonist will escape in time, and it's simply a matter of dramatic tension (and yet, how do you achieve dramatic tension when everyone knows ...

Re: But where will the hobbits live?

We recently closed on our very typical traditional 2-story house in the mid-boonies of NY state. When we did, a colleague commended us on our environmentally sound decision to buy a 100-year-old house rather than having a new one built. I hadn't thought about that at the time, but I guess it beats a...

Re: Math for Engtlish Students.

Ditto with "I could care less" and "I couldn't care less."

There's an interesting bit of circumstantial information there: either way it means the same thing, because if honestly do care about what someone is saying you wouldn't say so.
