Usually you'll want to talk with your immediate and extended family first to learn as many details as you can about the ancestor you are researching. Find out his full name, where he might have been born, whether he had any brothers and sisters, and so on. Then you are ready to expand your search to...

Thanks for the fun contest. Even if you're not a hobbit, that was a fine hobbit-like gesture to give away a present for your birthday.

I just started playing the whistle last year, mostly on a Low D combo from Tony Dixon. When I got my Copeland Low D I found it was much more forgiving when I tried to play fast.

My wife calls it a rubber room--that's where she wants me to play.

I agree. I just bought this book last week and I ditto everything Bloomfield says. McCullough has a great take on ornamentation too--well worth reading.

I don't have a Sindt, but I can't produce an in-tune C natural on my Copeland Low D unless I half hole the note. Cross fingerings just won't work.

Yes, I'd like to know about this one too. Anyone care to offer a brief outline/appraisal of either of these? I'm just getting started and expect that my primary flute tutor will be a video/CD, so I'd like to get a good one. Thanks. Dave <font size=-1>[ This Message was edited by: DaveO on 2002-01-06...

Mal,

Thanks for the great review. I can hardly wait to get mine--just a couple more months to go.

Thanks Dave, Brian, and David, for setting my mind at ease about caring for a wooden flute in Utah. I finally ordered one this morning!

Hey Brian, nice to here from another C&Fer in Utah. I live not too far south of SLC, in Highland.

I'm ready to move on beyond the Dixon Low D duo which I got as my first flute (and whistle) last year. I'm considering the merits of wooden versus polymer flutes here in Utah. The air is extremely dry in Utah, even more arid than in Colorado where I used to live. We also experience rather extreme se...

I'm still hoping for a response from John McHaffie as well. I heard so many good comments about his whistles that I ordered one too, back in the spring of last year. I was pleased when John sent out the message at the end of August that we would all receive our orders within 90 days. Unfortunately, ...

Michael and Chris,

Thanks for explaining this so well. I have a practice flute I've been playing with the pipers grip, and I'm spending most of the time working on the embouchure. It sounds like I need to adjust the grip as you suggested. Thanks again for your help.

I've been playing low D whistles for a few months and feel very comfortable with the typical flat-fingered grip. With even less experience with flutes, I'm wondering what kind of grip works best. When I switch between a low whistle and a flute, shouldn't I be able to use the same hand and finger pos...
