Re: Whistle Tour - New Maker

BTW-- why not Cocus for the whole whistle? Pieces not big enough probably. Nope, I have plenty of cocuswood which is why I offered you some if you want to try some. I have it up to 1.75" squares. So far I'm in the Gene Milligan camp, I've found that I prefer a delrin head but that may change. ...

Re: Whistle Tour - New Maker

From what I understand, genuine Cocuswood is quite rare and other species are sometimes sold to unsuspecting instrument makers as Cocus. The closest wood I've seen and used is Mopane which is a terrific woodwind material and not prohibited. Yep, it's almost impossible to get anymore and was all but...

Whistle Tour - New Maker

Some of you may know me as a bagpipe maker for the past 18 years. I've read about the whistle tours on the forums here and wanted to know how to get that started. I'm in no hurry but would like to do it this summer if possible. Thanks, Seth Cocuswood High D w/Delrin head http://i3.photobucket.com/al...

Re: Whistle Prototype

This is the type of head that I'd like try next, photo attached. The only issue I've found in my research over the years and talking to my bagpipe customers who play whistles is the issues with wood movements that we also see in bagpipes with regard to shrinkage that mostly affects the upper narrow ...

Re: Whistle Prototype

That has a nice sound. The C# quite flat though- is that intentional? I can't figure out the fipple and tone producing area of the head. Tell us about that block design. I'm new to whistle making. What do you mean by block design? I'm at the moment copying my Abell and Milligan whistles. The flat c...

Re: Whistle Prototype

Yea, what you guys are hearing is a C natural and that is intentional. I do the same thing when I go through the scale on my Uilleann pipes. I think I might have left the C# out of my scale so I should re-record that as I did the same thing on the recording from yesterday on my first wooden whistle ...

Whistle Prototype

Hi guys/gals. I decided to start making whistles as I've had an itch to try my hand at it for a few years as well as a little bit of encouragement from some of you guys. I have one tester who will be reviewing and I would like to know of a couple more folks that do reviews. I know you guys probably ...

Re: Reed Measurement for D Bass Regulator

I found hobby round brass tubing online. od 5/32" = 3.960mm so if the wall thickness of 0.014 would that make the id 0.142" = 3.6068mm. If I calculated right this tubing should work. Cheers Fergus Hi Fergus, the 5/32" o.d. tubing with a .014 wall is approx 1/8" i.d. You have to ...

Re: Reed Measurement for D Bass Regulator

Great discussion as I'm making a copy of the Cummings Taylor DB Regulator right now , just finished the reamer's a few weeks ago, as the DB was missing from my Taylor set when I got it. I'm nowhere near reeding the thing but any information on the subject is quite welcome. I know the Brennan book ha...

FS:David Quinn Half-Set

1982 David Quinn Half set in Blackwood/Ebony and Boxwood. Tayloresque triple bored bass, cane reeds original and still look new. Chanter top has stop key and chanter has C-nat key and Taylor type popping valve. Has original invoice from David. Original MacHarg bag looks crusty and will be replaced. ...

Reeds that came with my Taylor set.

Here are some measurements of a reed, a staple, and the (elder?) drone reed that was in the Taylor bass drone when I got the pipes. The ebony chanter that came with my Taylor pipes, which were probably made ( the pipes) around the same time as the A.J. Mullins Taylor set which is how David Quinn aut...

J.E. Brennan Book w/ Plans

The J.E. Brennan Bagpipe Book is finally available.  I have one of the very first copies and it's great. It's also quite a bit cheaper than originally estimated.  Doc did an excellent job recapturing the original drawings, plans, pictures, and much more from Brennan's personal notebook and plans. It...
