Re: Dan O’Dowd Egan

Tonally, that sounds more Kenna than Egan to my ear, but that's a pretty subjective assessment. Saw the O'Dowd set at some point in the last decade, and it was still in the family at the time. Although I didn't get to blow any air through the chanter (the Egan chanter was with it, can't remember whe...

Re: Lives of the Pipers-pipemaker listings, N. America pre-1

It's very likely I'm mixing the two stories up. Had the pleasure of meeting and playing a few tunes with Matty at the Catskills tionol a number of years ago and probably heard the Cagney story then, and it's 20 years or more since Eamonn told me how he got hold of his set of pipes. Now that I think ...

Thanks Nick, very interesting resource to dip into. Re. the entry on Michael Andersen, you may be interested to see/hear an old clip of Eamonn Brophy playing a set of his manufacture here, around 30 minutes in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ond4AhuN2LI I believe that particular set used to belong ...

Re: Donnacha Dwyer pipes

Haven't played Marcus Coulter's pipes, but have played Donnacha's own D set on a number of occasions and found it great -- responsive and well-balanced. No idea what his waiting list is like at the moment, but he made a new stock for an old set of mine a couple of years back and I wasn't waiting lon...

Re: Patrick Hennelly chanter

I've spent a good deal of time attempting to reed one particular Egan (and have heard much more knowledgeable authorities opine that the Taylor bores could be derived from Egan). I've gone back and forth on the reverse taper, but for the last while have been happiest with a straight staple rolled fr...

Re: C sharp

Try a rush that ends just below the c# hole. This should flatten everything else while leaving the C# and D unaltered. You'll probably have to insert your reed a bit deeper in the reed seat to bring the overalll pitch up a bit (which should also sharpen the c# and D a bit more relative to everything...

Breathnach wrote a couple of articles on Mairseal Alasdruim - they're collected along with some other interesting bits and pieces in a publication available from the NPU for 10 euros - The Man and his Music

Re: FS: Andreas Rogge Full Set in B

I've dropped the price of the set to 7300/6999 euros with/without bellows, over 1600 below Andreas' current (2008) list price for the same configuration. It's a full set in plumwood, brass and ivory, fully keyed+stopkey, tuning slides on the regulators and comes with a flightcase. Also no longer nee...

Re: Sligo player Eddie Cahill

There are a few tracks of Eddie Cahill's playing on a great double album called "John Vesey: Sligo Fiddler" put together by the late Tom Standeven a few years back. Haven't heard "Ah Surely", but it's a much better representation of Vesey's playing than the effort with Paul Brady...

Re: Egan's Universal Chanter Reed

I've had some success with a reverse taper, but have gone back to a cylindrical staple (rolled from a .5" x 2 1/16 " blank) with a larger eye(1/16"). This gives about the same internal volume with better tuning of the back D, which tends to be flat on my chanter, and seems to improve ...

Anderson is reputed to have been Micheal Coleman's favourite piper, even after he (Coleman) wore out his welcome by showing up under the haffluence a few times., according to the booklet that comes with the Coleman Viva Voce recording. A beautiful set of his manufacture (in a taylor-ish style) is in...
