Re: Best guitar for 100 quid
You won't get much for £100. If it's electric's she's after then look to Yamaha or Fender. Yamaha's Pacificas have always been good value and Fender's Squire series are also great beginners instruments. If it's an acoustic you can have a look at Freshman. They're built in China and finished in Scotl...

Re: the audacity of it all has become insufferably appalling.
Think there's a couple of pipers use Westminster bridge as their patch. There was 2 different ones when we were there a few weeks ago, neither were the one in that video. They were pretty good though but it was so busy with tourists (ourselves included) that we didn't hang around to listen. Also I d...

Re: the audacity of it all has become insufferably appalling.
The reason does largely seem to be the lack of general idea of what good piping sounds like on the part of the public as well as the new performer. You might think that, but the large number of awful pipers busking here in Scotland would say otherwise. There's one here that's just painful. He does ...

Re: more maps
Also, especially considering the context of the other states, surely "nerdiest state" isn't a bad thing?
Also the map earlier with the global peace index. What's the data behind that?

Re: Recent Celtic Myths Books?
I picked up a book called The Lore of Scotland at a local bookshop a few weeks ago. It's a large book, detailing popular myths, legends and ghost stories from around Scotland. Brilliant for dipping into: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lore-Scotland-guide-Scottish-legends-ebook/dp/B008S9YJ7U/ref=sr_1_1?s=bo...

Re: Consulting the Pasta Oracle
Well, looks like there's more than one way to skin this cat, and that's a huge relief. In a PM from a compassionate Chiffer (whom I would like to credit personally, but PMs being what they are...) I got this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqANylZI3nc&feature=youtube_gdata_player ...and si...

Re: Consulting the Pasta Oracle
I've never made it but have made (and eaten) similar simple pasta dishes in the past(a) so I'll have a stab at some general tips... I wouldn't worry about measurements too much, go by feel for the most part. You'll want more than a little oil and less than too much. 2-4 tablespoons probably dependin...

Re: Hazel Wrigley on what a guitar is
I think that in the strict confines of trad that comparing the guitar to the bodhran makes some sense, unfortunately (as a guitarist). A lot of the time when a guitar is heard on a trad recording (or in a session) the chords are played with a fast strumming action and in such a way as you only reall...

and turn it into this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojIHar8yDso I've learned quite a few other tunes in a similar fashion. What do you think? Good? Bad? Ugly? I'd like some honest feedback. Thanks! I really like this. I've said for ages that fast reels etc are very similar to metal lead guitar in...

Crunchy nut cornflakes. With, er, blackcurrent lemsip type stuff as I've got a cold. Pretty uninspiring.
The other week I had black pudding, bacon and eggs baked in ramekins. That was good!

Re: Help - Football Anthem
Why do Villa fans want to sing a traditional Irish tune? The reason Celtic do that is because they have a historic link to Ireland and still have a lot of Irish fans and pretend Irish fans. I'd also be VERY wary of copying anything one of the Glasgow teams does. They're generally not good role model...

Chord sequences for traditional songs
I've got a few books of Scots ballads. One of them contains chords and melodies, one has the melody lines printed with no chords and one just has the lyrics. If I try and search for the chords to some of the songs I get various different results for the same song. So my question is, does it matter w...
