Well, just to sort of follow up, I took a deep breath, got out the Dremel, and opened the height of the window up just a bit. It was only 5mm from the maker; I made it about 9mm. It seems to have worked, and this low-budget whistle is now playing about as well as it's ever going to, I guess! Whew--I...

At the moment, I'm playing with pvc/plastic practice instruments. Both are in tune (or I can make them so by rolling in/out) through two octaves. I love both fife and drum and trad, and I understand the difference in playing the two. My goal with both flutes and whistles is to reach a level of profi...

Is Fifing Cheating?

Well, here I am, in my 40's---and NOW I decide to blow whistles and flutes. Late bloomer, I guess... :D ...anyway, I'm playing both D flute and Bb fife. As a beginner, I'm finding I can play my fife much longer and with more authority than my D flute. Although I'm not sure why this is, I assume that...

Yes, Straycat, that's exactly it. Made in India, out of a copper or copper alloy. As I said, the tuning is fine, but the volume is low. As a result, I "push" a little harder, and therefore flip up into the second octave very easily. I don't know...I've had fair luck making flutes that are ...

Is there a tweak for this?

Hello all!

I bought a budget low-D whistle awhile back, and while it plays exactly in tune, it plays at a very low volume, and wants to flip into the second octave very easily. Any ideas on how to fix this? :-?

Thanks! :D

I've got full-blown carpal myself...one of the downfalls of riding motorcycles for a living. I have not had the release surgery, but it looms in my future. However, your friend should know that despite the small size of the incision, the surgery itself is major. She can expect a recovery time measur...

Great, Phil! Sounds like you've got an excellent guide in Eric. :D You know, Eric's bio says he was the piper at the funeral of former US President Ronald Reagan. I was assigned to work that funeral, and until today, I never put 2 and 2 together on who the piper was. I do remember he was great, and ...

As a guitarist, I've been a fan/player of the Blues all my life. "Mustang Sally" is one of the great "bar band" standards of our time. Wilson will be missed. As a side note, the great B.B. King is launching one last world tour this year, begining in Chicago. I know he'll stop in ...
