I don't know if this helps but the book "The Amateur Wind Instrument Maker" by Trevor Robinson, had a lot of information about both woodwind instruments (flutes, recorder, etc.), and about brasswind instruments (bugles and other horns) all of which could be applied to whistles. I think the...

You could try Silk and Steel strings. I really don't know any construction details about what makes them special and have never played any , but I have heard them played, and they do sound very mellow. Halfway between steel and nylon and they have ball ends. I would stick with the phospher bronze st...

Re: Mandolin

Give the the group Nickel Creek a listen to. The mandolin player is a real young guy and simply awsome. I have seen him play the most unbelievable stuff and all whith his eyes closed. That is Chris Thile. He's very good but the rest of the band IMHO is kinda , Oh I don't know how to put this, ... ....

Sam Bush, David Grisman and Dan Tyminski are all awesome and you should have no trouble getting there CD's from the library. David Grisman played alot of solo stuff. Dan Tyminski plays with union station. Sam Bush (the best of the three IMHO) plays with loads of bluegrass artists including New Grass...

Lamby , it's not icky to put the wet part of your lips on the whistle  . It's not icky? Are you sure? I'm not sure. I think it's icky. It's like kissing somebody or something! It's wet! I mean it's your whistle, you know where it's been, right? I actually clean the inside and outside of mine w...

This is another poll that requires an "Other" category. I got pretty good with the Diabolo. That encouraged me to try a few other items, so I tried juggling balls a few times - not gonna happen. I also bought a unicycle, but that's not gonna happen either. Roger I'm sorry I left out the &...

Any Jugglers?

After cruising these Forums for several weeks I began to notice a slight leaning by some individuals to the wierdo end of the spectrum. This in turn made me wonder how many of you can juggle. I personally can juggle three club-like objects (ie. clubs, knives, torches etc.) or four ball-like objects ...

The uke's re-entrant tuning gives it a characteristic sound that COULD be distracting for very trad ITM. However, you could easily use a low-G string and then you'd sound very much like a guitar. Since it sounds like from your post you do not, as of yet own a uke, you could buy a baritone ukulele w...

By PLAYING something in the right way, you can make lots of things sound traditional. ITM sessions in my neck of the woods would show a stir of dread at the sight of a uke. Even if it were masterfully played and everyone admired that, the ukester would be thought of as an oddity. I suppose that's b...

It depends on who you are playing with. If you are playing with someone who plays for the sake of the music they'd probably love some light accompaniment. If you are playing with someone playing Irish Traditional Music because it's traditional then their could be some raised eyebrows. As someone who...

Slightly breathy tone and conical bore sharp enough at the low end to be used as an effective close quarters weapon.
