Re: Mellowdog-Gen C

I did the same thing. I actually didn't care for the sound or playing characteristics of the mellow dog so I did some filing on the blade until I was happy with it, popped it onto a nickel Gen C tube and it has become my go-to C whistle.

Eh, what can I say; I create for a living so sometimes I feel the need to create words to express meaning ;)

I really have a hard time choosing between B and C. I selected C today.

Re: how often do you listen to recorded pipe music?

I listen to at least one full album each day plus more dispersed among my frequent ITM listening. I have the benefit of working at a computer all day (graphic designer) and can listen intentfully without being distracted from the creative process (rather, enhancing it). End of July I begin a new car...

Re: another Gen tweak post

Not sure if your terminology is referring to the same thing as I am but that "hollowness" is something I actually look for in a whistle. It is difficult to describe but I think it has something to do with being able to hear some of the acoustics within the tube. Whistles that are really pu...

Re: When do you practice music?

I used to play a lot in the mornings as I had an hour or so between when my wife left for work and when I left. I found that playing in the afternoon/evening when my joints and muscles are more warmed up has increased the quality of my practice. Really, I just play whenever I get the bug rather than...

Re: Walton Irish tin whistle peeling! HELP!

Nobody here is talking about nickel plating or paint. Both Generation and Waltons brass whistles come with a clearcoat of some sort on the brass (nickel plated Gens do not have this). It keeps them looking shiny as the metal is not exposed to the elements. However, after playing for a while your fin...

Re: Walton Irish tin whistle peeling! HELP!

Anytime I've picked up a Waltons or Generation I've always stripped the clear coat away with nail polish remover (acetone). Works quickly and easily with no side effects.

Re: Thoughts on copper vs aluminum whistle

Was going to weigh in but this pretty much summed up my position: Given the choice between a nickel (plated) tube and a brass one I'd generally pick the nickel as I feel it's (marginally) brighter. it wouldn't be something to fuss about too much and the difference in brightness is similar to that of...

Re: Drones - Cork or Thread

Cork and PFTE (teflon) Tape are both more trouble and risk than they're worth. Using dry hemp works just fine and lasts long when applied and used properly. Cork and Tape have been touted as easy or maintenance-free but based on experience I'd avoid them. If anyone wants a maintenance free instrumen...

Re: Cillian o'briain's tweaked D

I've found this whistle to be rather sweet in comparison to stock Feadogs. Is it possible that the "raspy" sound is a product of your playing habits from other whistles? When I've played tweaked whistles by other known tweakers I've found that the result of getting rid of all "raspine...

Re: Pipe Bag Cover

I've never been interested in bag covers but one thing I've always been curious about is their impact on ergonomics. I've experimented a lot since starting on the pipes to find a mainstock and blowpipe position that were ergonomically natural, comfortable and minimized awkwardness so that I have les...
