Re: Whistle Giveaway
I would have to say that Ashoken Farewell is probably my favorite.

Re: Whistle advice
There’s no buzz that I’ve noticed in my Syn set. They are fairly high backpressure, which I like. To me, they have a fairly smooth sound. When I first got them, the adjectives that kept coming to mind were creamy and thick. This is in fairly direct comparison with a Faedog C, a Dixon Trad D, and a D...

Re: Whistle advice
Out if the collection I have amassed so far, I would say the Syn is the hardest to accidentally overblow.

Re: Whistle advice
I’m new as can be, but I’m wondering about a Syn. The C in my set is wonderful. And loud. And not breathy at all.

Re: Where have you taken your whistle?
I’m never far from my car, so I’ve taken to keeping a Dixon and a Generation in the car, do I can just grab it if I’m going to a park or trail. Back in August, I was at my girlfriend’s birthday party, and everyone went down the hill to mess with the horses, so I stayed up top and drug it out. None o...

Re: Bagpipe Tunes On Whistle
I just read your response to rather Whistle Embellishments thread from earlier, and it certainly makes sense. I play bass, both electric bass guitar and contrabass, and I certainly use different techniques when playing bluegrass and baroque, or doom metal, jazz, or funk on the electric. It stands to...

Re: Bagpipe Tunes On Whistle
I think this is something that I may explore more. I love both Scottish music as well as Irish, and it did not really occur to ne until I was whistling and humming some bagpipe tunes at work a few days ago.
Will learning GHB style ornamentation make it more difficult to properly play Irish tunes?

Re: Bagpipe Tunes On Whistle
In all seriousness, though, being melodies that I know perfectly, they seem to adapt well for practice. Because I don’t play pipes, I’m not really getting into a habit of playing them like pipe tunes, but trying to play like a whistle. Good practice at nice, flowing legato notes and octave and pitch...

Bagpipe Tunes On Whistle
I’ve noticed that some of the bagpipe tunes that I like listening to seem to fit on the whistle quite well. Seems to be good practice for breath control, and practicing cuts. Here’s my question, though. As there are no drones on a whistle, do you all think I can fire up the weedeater, maybe try to t...

Re: An Introduction
I stared too hard and too long into the whistle; it stared back at my soul. It said “Come to me! Love me!” Then it said for me to go get some tacos. On an unrelated note, all of my dogs seem to love the whistles. The black lab climbs up behind me on the chair and listens. I really thought it would b...

Re: An Introduction
I figured out the problem with the Faedog. I finally popped the head off for a look, and there was some excess plastic. I got tiff of that, and now the tone is not getting on my nerves. It helped the responsiveness a bit, too.
Got a Dixon Trad coming for a car whistle tomorrow, too.

Re: An Introduction
That’s one thing I noticed early on; rotation and hand angle seems to be key to properly using the pipers grip. I found someone in the past that mentioned the exact method you just did with the ring finger. It may have even been you. I actually started several weeks à ago going through the entire wh...

Re: An Introduction
I live in Kingsport, and spend a lot of my time in southwest Virginia, so your mother was right down the road from me. I haven't spent a great deal of time with the whistles, and the Chieftain just showed up yesterday, but there are some things that I have noticed right off the bat. I don't get much...
