Re: Price for new Olwell keyless flute?
Best is to contact Olwell directly (through their website) and ask. I have a 2022 pricelist, but from a recent email exchange I know there's been an increase since then so I won't quote the past or speculate the present here. Price also depends on whether you want a tuning slide or not.

Re: Pitch, and simple keyless flutes
I also play both silver Boehm (Muramatsu) as well as simple system- currently a Burns Folk Flute while I eagerly await my turn to come up on the Olwell keyless list. I'm puzzled by the D being so sharp, and wondering how the rest of the scale is. Are the E and F# also noticeably sharp? How are the o...

Re: Inhaling through nose
I've known Balkan style clarinetists who've used circular breathing to great musical effect when holding an impossibly long note at the beginning of a solo, particularly one that's got tension with the chord or riff being played underneath- which often causes excitement at a live event to go off the...

Re: Wood whistles
My favorite whistle is made of rosewood, and I love the way it *feels* in my hands. I feel like I'm playing a beautiful work of art, not just another whistle. The weight/texture/etc. puts me in a good mood and probably makes me play better. My favorite clarinet (I own and regularly play 5) is also ...

Re: Wood whistles
In terms of materials, including questions of weight and density- imo it's a mistake to discount purely subjective factors. Assuming all instruments in question are indeed well-made, a heavier or thicker instrument may make the player feel like they need to blow or support differently, which may in ...

Re: four month old flute cracks
My repair Lady put wood clarinets in the refrigerator to help dry out stuck Tenon I've put stuck clarinets in the fridge as well for short periods, but carefully wrapped in plastic bags- not to dry out the tenons, but to help cool the wood so it contracts a bit. It's nervewracking tho- I'd suggest ...

Re: four month old flute cracks
For what it's worth, back in 1998 I had 3 new (and thankfully under warranty) Buffet clarinets crack within a year. All 3 were carefully/borderline OCD broken in (5 minutes a day for a few days, then 10 etc.... swabbed out immediately, not subject to a lot of house temp fluctuation at all). Seemed t...

Re: Playing with a friend , her music in many keys, buy different keyed whistles?
I play Balkan and Greek music as well (on clarinet, not on whistle). Without seeing the music, it's tough to say anything absolute- but a lot of music from those parts of the world mixes flats and sharps in the scales, and some pieces modulate quite a bit to either new tonal centers or to a differen...

Re: Potential Fraudster Alert, Jack Harrison AKA "jack438"
Thanks so much for the timely heads up. I also have a WTB that I'd recently posted, and just now received an email from jackharrison438@gmail about it. A poor cut and paste job at that- he'd just copied my WTB headline listing and so midway thru the email, the font/font size suddenly changed.

WTB 6-key Blackwood Copley flute
I'm currently on the waitlist- my turn is due to come up in October. Not in a huge rush, but figured I'd see if any US-based C&F'ers have one in good condition they'd like to part with....

Re: Delrin Pratten
We're getting a little off course from the OP's question- but my own thoughts are that even more than the blackwood (or other woods) vs delrin in the environmental cradle-to-grave question is to pass along instruments that are sitting around and not being used. Saying that as the owner of 5 hardwood...

Re: Whistle Giveaway
Not sure if this is a stretch away from what would be defined as a "tune," but I've been reminded lately of how much I love love love the first movement (in 3/4) of Brahms' f minor Clarinet Sonata, opus 120: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFZRF38HAoY In case I need a backup that better fi...

Re: Nice Drones for Practice and Tuning
I use the Drone Tuner app quite a lot. It's not free, but they do use real instruments- and a really cool spirograph-like graphic to display your intonation vs the drone (best with headphones for this feature).
