Re: Whistle Instruction

You may also wish to check out Blaine Chastain's online courses... I used them for a while and found them helpful. Within the courses are technique courses and foundational courses. The technique courses teach ornaments while foundations is basic stuff like how to hold it etc. There is a huge librar...

Re: Flute Embrochure

I am on a similar journey as you, although with a year head start, so I will offer my experience to you: 1. My compliments to you on starting out with a good flute. I initially bought an inexpensive flute to dip my toe. After several months I bought a much better flute and my tone and playing improv...

Re: Whistle used performing Themes in “The Hobbit Trilogy Movies”

Assuming you mean the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which features "Concerning Hobbits" (the best known of the tracks featuring tin whistle)... Sir James Galway performed the whistle and flute parts in Concerning Hobbits with the London Symphony Orchestra in the soundtrack. You can see him pe...

Re: The Wonders of Cheap Whistles

Has anyone tried the Feadog Pro? Apparently the barrel wall is thicker than the standard Feadog, plus it has the word "Pro" in the title and costs more, so therefore is must be better :)

Curious if anyone has tried it and their opinion.

Re: What are the first couple of Tunes you play to start off your practicing?

I go old school... scales and arpeggios.

It started off as a habit from classical training on the clarinet, but I came to appreciate the value of arpeggios when learning tunes with a series of successive jumps.

Re: Embouchure suggestions on fife / piccolo

Update on this thread, and thank you for the excellent advice and suggestions. I bought a Copley Delrin flute and have played it for a couple weeks. I noticed an immediate improvement in my tone and playing, and that was encouragement enough for me to update my profile to add "Recently started ...

Re: Whistle and flute

I have played whistle for several years, and decided to try the flute about 8 months ago, so perhaps my story will help. Embouchure is the real education, not the fingerings. Knowing the fingerings is one less thing to learn, and will help you get some tunes (such as they are) out of the flute quick...

Re: Practicing/playing with different makers

I am of both schools. I bought some nicer, expensive whistles after playing for a year or so, but I have found that I gravitated back to the whistles I started with: Gen, Clare and Dixon Brass Trad. They sound much better now than they did when I first started, maybe sitting in the box beside the Ki...

Re: Piccolo Question/Recommendation

Davy Angus makes very nice fifes in D. I owned one in rosewood and was very pleased with it. The embouchure cut is round... I am not sure that an oval cut is possible given the size and physics of the instrument. You could ask Davy. He was very responsive to my questions. His website is http://www.f...

Thank you very much! I didn't know about this event.

I see you are located in SW Ontario, if you know of any other similar events or sessions, please let me know. I think I don't know where to look :)

Re: Embouchure suggestions on fife / piccolo

Thank you, everyone, for your thoughts and advice! It has been a year since my original post, here is a summary of my journey. I decided to buy a flute. My embouchure with the fife had developed to the point where I could crush walnut shells with my lips, which was a good party trick but didn't do m...

Re: Suggestions for a travel and practice whistle?

I travel for business, and I bring a Dixon DX001 one-piece polymer whistle with me, primarily because it does not set off the metal detector at the airport. It's funny how pipe-shaped metallic objects make airport security nervous. Anyways, if you are not traveling by air or any other mode that requ...

Re: Best high D whistle under 100€ ?

Killarney most definitely. I owned both the Killarney and Wild whistles (note the past tense). I kept the Killarney. Excellent tone, in tune through two octaves and a delight to play. The Killarney, Wild and Syn all use a similar three-piece head design. The Wild is very top heavy and the tolerances...

Re: Can anyone recognize this whistle?

Oh, the hazards of trying to buy things online these days... I asked some rather specific questions and asked for a close-up photo of the area under the windway to see if there were any markings. The photo I got back was clearly from a different whistle than the original photo. I declined the sale i...
