Re: Foam for Regulator Tuning
Benedict made my regs, and put that foam on the rushes in each. They're thin strips, glued lengthwise to the rushes, just a couple of millimetres tall/wide. I think the idea was that he glued a strip the entire length of the rush, then pulled off the pieces he didn't want. Pretty expeditious! He men...

WTB bass regulator in D
Hi, Finally got around to making some headway with playing my tenor & baritone regulators (from Benedict Koehler). I'd like to get a bass reg to (roughly) match, at least acoustically, if not visually. Those of you who know me might remember that my regs are brown/brass, while my chanter/drones ...

Re: Bass Regulator
I'm actually looking to buy a bass regulator in D, preferably that folded shape (but not necessarily). I already have a tenor and bari from Koehler, so I'm looking for something to match that from an acoustic perspective, even if not literally from Benedict's hands or those of his partner-in-cane, D...

I'm just coming across this now Nick. I've read a couple, and they really paint a vivid picture of what life was like for these guys. Look forward to reading more. Well done!

FS: 6-keyed Lehart D flute. SOLD
Bought this six-keyed Lehart back in 2002, thinking I'd get into playing a lot of funky tunes (in A, Dm, etc.). But I ended diving into the pipes for years, and flute got put aside. It's better off going to someone who'll play it. Pictures here https://ibb.co/album/dv7XbF . His flutes are known for ...

Re: Shipping reeds in winter
FWIW, it's not necessarily just an extreme-cold thing. I took my set back to Ireland years ago, and found that the reed had died in transit. I took it as carry-on, so temperature was probably OK, but the dry air on the plane just seemed to suck the life out of it, I suspect much in the manner that P...

Re: Father Henebry wax cylinder collection online
tommykleen,
I'll be looking forward to hearing you (and your henchmen) perform from the Henebry collection at the next Northeast Tionól piper's chair.
Your solo rendition of the Touhy catalog is legendary and priceless.

WTB: B chanter
Hi,
I'm looking for a chanter in B. Anyone have something to sell? My dream stick would be (in no particular order) Quinn, Rogge, Kennedy, Wooff, Gleeson, but open to others too. Feel free to PM me, if that works better for you.
Happy New Year to all!

Re: Piping "compliments"
So Tommykleen, what's your interpretation of this encounter between me and an accordion player, about 3 months ago: Me: Nice to meet you. I'm Frank. Accordion: Nice to meet you Frank. Your pipes sound great.... Me: Thanks... Accordion: .... nice and quiet. I've often played with pipes and they can b...

Re: Recommendations for pipe cases
You could try a Protec viola case (such as this http://www.ebags.com/protec/standard_viola_pro_pac_casewine_interior/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=127679&productid=1331216&color=Black&sourceID=ADWPRODUCT) I've used one for years, and find the back-pack straps (optional extra) make it ...

poll on gracing with back D
Who's up for a gratuitous poll? It's my experience that pipers fall into two camps when it comes to gracing with the back D. Some do it as often as possible, since they feel it gives the music a lovely bright sound. Others avoid when at all possible, finding its bright sound harsh and jarring. Which...

Re: Boston Pipe Works C Chanter Staple Dimensions?
So, as promised (if a little late), some reed dimensions for Boston Uilleann Pipeworks C chanter reed.
Head width: 10.6mm
Reed length: 82.4mm
Brass tubing, 4mm internal diameter
And, as best I could estimate without dismantling the reed, the staple length is about 48mm.
Hope that helps.

Re: Ronan Browne/Caoimhin O Raghaille: Full Set RTE
It's no wonder you're confused about how to pronounce his last name. The usual pronunciation of 'Raghallaigh' would be the same as 'Reilly' (in English orthography). (Irish spelling might look strange, but it's actually pretty consistent, so there's no ambiguity about how to pronounce it.) And yet, ...
