Re: Beginners flute

I'll throw in another vote for the Hamilton practice flute - you sure will get your money's worth if you're on a tight budget and want something tough. I haven't tried as many as the gurus on this site, though. That said, I finally got my mitts on a Folk Flute (after all these years, yeah I know!) a...

Re: New or used flute for a beginner?

When passaged are fingery, I imagine some ghost yelling, "I played Beethoven on that friggin' thing!! In 6 flats!!! Stop whining!!!!". While I can think of places where Beethoven writes six flats, I'm struggling to think of anywhere he asks a flute to play in more than five... can you? :w...

Re: 3D Printed Whistle

Keep it up, folks! I have failed a couple times, with and without the thingiverse file, to get a marginally playable instrument. And 3D printing is part of my job. My natural trumpet design also sucked boogers, but that’s another story.

I would love any tips or .stl files!

Re: Range/jargon comparing to concert flutes - several quest

I have thoroughly enjoyed my Mellow Dog for many years. It has been on stages in several countries and the sound is just lovely. I don’t think you’ll get many arguments against it on this forum.

I think you’re going to have a grand time with this. Enjoy!

Re: Beginner following some, but not all, advice

I think you’ve got a bunch of useful answers, but I’ll toss my 2p. It’s not all or nothing. Yes, I can get away with closed fingerings on some tooters on some passages, but I’ll partially vent quite a bit on airs. Since you brought it up, I caught myself whisper venting the e (oxx xoo) for tuning on...

Re: New or used flute for a beginner?

Welcome and congrats on the Windward! I think you'll find C&F full of expertise and inspiration for those times when your lip cramps up and you have to rest. When I was a noob on flute I'd regularly get patient answers from award-winning performers, master builders, and amateurs with ridiculous ...

Hope you and yours stay safe. Sending hugs and 50 more badass firefighters from the Frozen North. Some are my old instructors, and I hope it helps. I remember when I did wildland and interface firefighting training. I asked the instructor how this training ranked internationally. "It's pretty g...

Re: Whistle and flute roll

Back to the roll question, I'm just going to make one. None that I've seen have a long enough flap, stand up by themselves on stage, and have all the right slots. I'm picky, yes. I do use a chef's knife roll (trifold) sometimes, and I have a huge flannel roll custom made for a class set of 30 Genera...

Dang. I’m intrigued. I’ve waded pretty deeply into pitch and temperament in European art music through the ages, but keys and key centres in ITM is a whole nother ocean. Hold my beer....

Re: Received my Freeman Mellow Dog - I have a question.

You might like like a modern Burke. The most recent one I played had a pretty high backpressure, more than I prefer. It was surprising as I had another from a decade earlier that was perfect. Sweet, low back pressure. I regret selling that one. My mezzo A is a Burke, and I love it dearly. I’m getti...

Re: Tin whistle in loud onstage environments - monitoring &

I run my mic into a personal monitor (clamps on the mic stand) and run the ‘out’ to the board. It is really directional. Had a bad experience with in-ear, but YMMV.

It can run the monitor channel, but if the stage is loud I just use it to hear myself, and rely on the other monitors for the band mix.

Re: On-stage microphones for a whistle

I’m using a TC Helicon personal monitor / processor for everything. Best piece of gear I have, apart from instruments. The effects are subtle... a smidge of de-essing, compression, and reverb even works with really trad situations. Sounds like me, only better. Ok, the beer holder that clamps on to a...

Re: Low D - Wood Anyone?

I had to start using a sax strap to support it, because using friction of the fingers on the whistle body alone meant keeping a "death grip" on the thing, which did not promote good playing I’m seeing more and more clarinet, oboe, and soprano sax players with neck straps, and I’ve joined ...

Re: Received my Freeman Mellow Dog - I have a question.

I really should get a blackbird. On the Mellowdog / Susato front, I really love having both. My much-loved and twice-repaired mellowdog feels so responsive and sweet, but not sine-wavey. The susato is just a beast, resistant to wind, weather, and spilled beer. But thirty years of saxophone playing m...

Don’t get distracted! Remember, Faust thing’s Faust!

Late orders make people Verdi annoyed.
