Re: What's this tune?

[Thread revival - Mod]

Just came upon this, and realised that I never came back to say thanks. I can't for the life of me remember what I wanted that for, but do remember that the answer I got was spot on for what I needed at the time.

So - thank you!

Re: Elf vs Park Every vs Dixon trad -- help choosing one please!

Thanks folks, lots of information there. A few responses to your questions and comments: Price range: kinda "reasonable-ish". Strictly speaking I shouldn't be spending on such a frivolous thing at the moment (the economy here is in a very bad way, work is in very short supply), so I'm thin...

Re: When/where to visit Ireland?

Hi gang, I'm considering a trip to Ireland in 2010 and was wondering if there were any times to aim for or stay away from? It's all about the music of course, but I think I prefer a string of quality pub sessions to a week of a mobbed festival, but never having been to either in Ireland I'm open to...

Elf vs Park Every vs Dixon trad -- help choosing one please!

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me a bit about characteristcs of the Park Every whistle and Sandy Jasper's Elf Song, relative to say the Dixon Trad? The story so far: * I started with a Clarke original. Loved the "sweetness" of the sound. But I keep the whistle in my bag, so the mouthpiec...

I don't know MT, I think it's all down to personal taste; but just like cars, the red ones are faster
Hey, I was just about to say that, but you beat me to it. Do you have a red keyboard? ;)

Re: How to get rid of stagefright at sessions?

There is a difference, too, in being able to play a tune well enough to play along in session, and being able to play it well enough to start it. There's a third category too: being able to play the tune well enough to carry it off when you're the only melody instrument present (God love those guit...

....No-one's in charge or 'hosting', no-one's paid, there's no free beer but it's the focal point of the week for a few locals, livened up by visitors from further afield. Some top players, some learners... anyone's who's criticising poor playing probably doesn't get the point of a session being a ...

Some other miscellaneous notes about restrictions of the licences: * You may not alter the lyrics of a song or the tune (melody or harmony)... A good post that illustrates the problem and pitfalls with CCLI nicely. Churches pay money to an organisation so they think they've covered all the copyrigh...

Re: Looking for Praise and Worship songs

I agree that if a church can afford it, CCLI is great . Especially if you get the lead sheets/chord sheets. (my own opinions on Christian music copyrights set aside... heh heh heh) If a church can afford it AND if that church is not "liturgical". If it is traditional (eg Catholic) church ...

Re: USA Sessions: Do they get lost in translation?

But I was under the impression that the paid-host system in Ireland is also by no means any more universal than it is here in the States. In towns and cities where tourists are a major source of income, the publicans need to make sure that the musicians show up, and that they keep playing for the t...

Re: USA Sessions: Do they get lost in translation?

What you may not have spotted was that the two or three people who are being paid by the pub to host the session will be making sure that the tunes keep on coming, at acceptable (for time and location) tempo, quality and frequency. What is acceptable depends totally on the views of the publican/bar-...

With YouTube, you sometimes get exactly what you paid for it. Someone on here mentioned the following a while back - I've found it very useful for finding higher-than-average-quality MP3's of tunes. A custom Google search engine for finding tutorial tunes online, e.g., when you want to learn "G...

... offering a "CPVC tin" whistle for sale is confusing at best, and the confusion is unnecessary, no? The only maker I know offhand that offers tinwhistles is the Clarke Tinwhistle Company (note, one word). And Clarkes are, or course, made from rolled tinplate. If tin whistles are made o...
